Search Tips
Can you search using multiple words? Whenever I try to search for two words ie: "1960 Safari", it seems to only search for one of the words. Any advice on this?

I like to use the Google Search now that Andy and the Mods have graciously added it to the software package. You can enter whatever phrase you like, and the Google algorithm will search and sort by relevance for you.
Good luck!

The search function is a crock.
Why didn't someone answer the post #1 above, instead of just atta-boying the management?
Please tell me how to search the combo of Marathon Tail Lights without bringing up every post regaring Marathon Tires or marathon running, or tail lights (in general) without Marathon also in the post.
I tried to enclose "Marathon Tail Lights" in the quotation marks and it had no worthy effect.
Have ALL the geeks abandoned this forum? or have they just given up on the Search features?

Google
Here's how I do it. This method was mentioned in another post and works very well. Go to google.com and enter you search like this:
site:www.airforums.com marathon tail lights
make sure to enter the punctuation and spacing as shown above. I think you'll be happy with the results

The vBulletin software search function is limited in some sense but has powers that make it my choice in a majority of situations. I like Google search for exact phrases but results are returned as entire threads; if threads are long it can be a pain to find the desired search terms. It helps me to set my default view to 50 posts per page in the control panel -- and then use the browser's 'find' function.
vBulletin's search is the other choice and it has strengths if you customize your search. Try using one specific search word, narrow your search to a specific subforum (lower right corner of the advanced search window), and in some situations 'Show results as posts' (lower left corner of the advanced search window.
I can go to the www.airforums.com/forums page and see only three threads have ever been started on '60 Safaris. If I search for Marathon in the Electrical subforum, I don't find even a single mention. Therefore I'd almost conclude nobody has ever posted on that light.

If you do a Google search: ("your keyword or phase here" site: www.airforums.com)
Use quotation if you want to find an exact phrase, without quotation will find only pages containing all your keywords.
Clink on the <Cached> link in the results and all your search words will be highlighted when you open that web page.
Another neat trick for Google is to click on the <Advanced Search> link and it will give you the option of
Find web pages that have..."all these words:" or "this exact wording or phrase:" or "one or more of these words"
You can also select the number of results per page, language, file types.
What I find most useful is to click on the link <Date, usage rights, numeric range, and more> in the advanced search and you can search for how recent the page is, past 24 hours, week, month or year and where your keywords show up: anywhere in the page, title of the page or test of the page, etc...

I just noticed that the search function doesn't work if you are in a thread.

Troubleshooting....
Are you using the search thread option or going up to the upper nav bar and choosing search?
Are you using the regular search or the google search?
Are you getting an error message?

Using "search" at the navigation bar.
Regular search.
No error messages--the seach window just blinks out. It does this if you click on the text window for either regular search or Google.
When I'm at the CP root page, it works fine. I didn't check to see if it worked or didn't at other root pages.

A "root page" is my made-up description of the place you are when you click on any of the functions in the navigation bar. Like the top page of that function. Sort of like being at the root directory (for those of us who remember CPM and DOS).

You might also try using the + and - parameters at the end of your query to refine your search. For example, enter in "Tail lights" +Marathon –running OR enter in Marathon +"tail lights" –running OR enter in Marathon +"tail lights"
You can add more or fewer +'s or -'s. The quotation marks tie two or more words together in the search. I've had good luck with Google searches similar to this: "1974 Airstream" site:Airforums.com

Paula,
I believe it is referring to an HTML Tag
The text below is enclosed with an HTML tag that will display the text as bold.
<b>this is bold </b>
I am not really sure why somebody would want to do a tag search.

And here I was hoping that I could "tag" something interesting and come back to it later - without having to remember the exact wording.
