I looked at the spare tire mounting assembly and found two mounts on the rear with a pin welded on each one that act as pivot points for the carrier. I’m guessing those are the weak points as the front bracket looks more substantial.

I ran a web strap around the top and bottom of both mounts to support it until the repairs can be made. I didn’t see any signs of a weak weld but it can’t hurt.

Recall

You may want to reread the recall notice. It seems the issue is with the front bracket. I would hate to see you tie up the back and have the front fail.

Personally, I would put the spare in my TV until it is fixed. Mine is in the SN range but not the date range, so hopefully it is OK.

Thanks Wyo Silver, the notice we got in the mail did not include the photos and steps required. Murphy’s law that I’d do the wrong side! Easy to remove the strap in the driveway. Will have to see if there’s a way to secure the front.

I’ve got a spare web tie down ratchet strap and might just go around the frame and carrier for piece of mind until we can get it repaired.

Sounds like a good belt & suspenders idea. I fabricated a support using a sheet metal strap that goes over the 2" X 5" chassis member, then has a 1/2" diameter bolt through the strap under the chassis member that extends three or four inches into the hollow square handle for the tire support. That way if the recalled bracket fails the bolt into the handle will hold it all up.

The recalled bracket on my trailer is only welded down one side. I'm guessing it should have been welded on both sides.....

Erik you inspired me to take another shot at it!

Plan B: Coiled bike cable through the U-hook on the bar and around the frame.

Pulled the pin to simulate a bracket failure and it dropped a few inches but held it off the ground. Piece of mind until parts are available for the recall...

EDIT: I moved the padlock below the battery cable after taking the photo.

That looks like a good fix. Another thing I considered, and would have been easier than what I ended up doing, was just laying a metal bar on the right chassis member and over to the top of the battery box. Then a strap could be run down from this supporting bar to the handle of the spare tire cradle.

Unsure of which weld Airstream in concerned about, I removed the spare tire and put it in my TV. I also removed the two bolts holding the back of the carrier into the frame and then took out the whole carrier. The bolts went back into the holes left in the frame so water couldn't get in there. No chance of anything falling off on the highway now! It only took 15 minutes and a 3/4" socket.

Here is the actual NHTSB document with everything including how this happened (3rd party fabricator).

Mistakes do happen and I’m glad they caught this and are correcting it. Hoping no one was hurt or lost/damaged equipment.

Ironic to me that even the recall notice by NHTSA itself includes a mistake in its final reference to the vendor as LaseFab. I get that typos aren’t necessarily as threatening - just ironic....

I saw that too and had to go back up the doc to verify the name. LaserFab.

Aside — when we were in Jackson Center last year we saw stacks of frames out back waiting to be fitted with bodies. They sure did look shiny and beautiful.

I’m sure Airstream is passing most if not all cost on to LaserFab since they didn’t weld to print specs. Depends on how the liability clauses are constructed. I was a hospital Risk Manager and Safety Officer in my work life.

Mine was a late 2018 baby and isn’t included in the recall. But I took a good photo of my bracket so others can compare it to their welds.

Recall completed

Stopped by the dealer Friday on the way back from our 2 day shake-down trip and got the recall completed in 10 minutes in the parking lot. All set for our Colorado adventure in August!

Stove top burner danger

An important recall to note here in this Sticky Topic IMO. Will post more details in SSquared's thread.

Glad to see that someone with a 2021 25' AS caught this, and is able to use his cooktop again.

Thanks for posting this important safety info.
Thanks again SSquared . . . well done.
