Recall notice

I just received a letter in the mail notifying me of a recall on certain model 2014 and 2015 trailers.

It says there might be a problem with the "power inlets" having loose connections that might get hot enough to start a fire.

Remedy is to inspect and replace the power inlet.

I rec'vd one as well. I like how it says certain models? Why doesn't it just tell us which models.

I am somewhat concerned about your posts. We are currently out in New Lucy (2015 FC 25FB) and will not be back at home until after Christmas, so I am not receiving any nail mail. I do not know if I have received a recall notice from Airstream.

I am assuming that the power inlets referred to are the outside power connectors for the 30 amp shore power cord.

I would assume that the recall applies to you as well. Maybe you could call the dealer and have them check your VIN.

I am assuming the power inlets are where the generator and power cord plugs into the trailer.

Does it say exactly what an owner is suppose to do?

I have a 2015 Serenity and live a long way from any Airstream dealer.

What do they mean by loose? Loose on the inside of the trailer. The external plug screws on so how can it be loose?

Not sure what exactly that recall notice means.

Found this on the Canadian Government website, but nothing listed on the US Recall website yet... Road Safety Recalls Database

I'd call the mothership on Monday Morning - probably something any competent electrician can fix. Meanwhile just go feel every inlet/outlet to make sure you don't have any hot spots.

It SOUNDS like it might be the 30 amp cord inlet.

May I suggest a workaround for the weekend? I had a 30 amp cord stolen on a very cool night. I ran a heavy duty extension cord from the post through the fantastic fan (Just snap out the screen and open the lid manually, then tighten it down so it'll just allow the cord through. ) Hooked up a space heater and kept nice and toasty. I had a second cord I could have also run had I needed it.

Do they not know which serial numbers have the defective parts ... it would be nice to know rather than just receiving the general letter of recall ...

Here is the exact wording:

Quote:
It has been decided that certain Airstream recreational vehicles were built with power inlets with loose electrical connections. If the wires are loose, arcing may occur causing a rise in heat which may result in the melting of the power inlet or if hot enough, a fire.
The recall is listed as 14V-690. It is listed on the NHTSA website.

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchSafetyIssues

Here is the letter sent to the dealer:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...4V690-0347.pdf

More info:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...4V690-6478.PDF

It appears that the screws on the power inlets may be defective not allowing them to be tightened properly.

It affects all AS trailers manufactured between 11/26/13 and 8/14/14. The issue is the Furion plug assembly (I would assume front and back).

Fixing it yourself is an option, but you'd still have an open recall notice on your trailer. Might be an issue if you ever decided to sell.

One might hope that an independent shop could do the check as some dealers I would not trust to touch a cabinet knob inside my trailer, let alone the electrical system.

Fortunately, when our trailer inlet service was completely rewired for our solar system, the Furrion power connection hardware was checked as that wiring was totally replaced as it went to a new fuse power box.
