Thanks Bill for the Firefox Private Window [FPW] info. I also use Firefox on my Mac laptop.

Will airforums let you log in if you are in this new FPW mode, after you have first cleared previous cache, history and cookies?

Thanks again,

Peter

PS -- No need to quote me if we are posting in order +/- BTW.

Yes. I just logged out, quit Firefox, got back on Firefox, cleared history, cookies and cache and clicked on Private Browsing window, logged back onto AirForums, and posted this reply!

Edit note: And was not challenged by CAPTCHA!

Good news, thanks. I will try it later, but will also do the normal routine of clearing everything at the end of each session. Still wondering about LSO's -- Super Cookies, but in Firefox>Tools>BetterPrivacy>Remove All LSO's I don't see much.

Next time before you quit Firefox, maybe check the path above, and also Firefox>Preferences>Privacy>Show Cookies, which right now for me show a line item for airforums.com in the "Site" column, but no Cookie Name listed. I forgot that I had toggled on "Use Tracking Protection In Private Windows" a few weeks ago.

Gotta run . . .

TBD

While trying to post or review a post, I often got a window that said something was not available, used back button, got post back again, tried posting or reviewing, worked slowly. Some spots were long or included photos, some were not. Can't remember exact words because I didn't care so long as I didn't lose the post.

On a Mac, you can copy a post before doing anything by selecting all of it with Command-A, then Command-C to copy it, then if it lost, get it back with Command-V to insert it.

Thanks for the keyboard shortcut reminders, very helpful, as I normally forget about them. Another useful one I find is for a cropped screen shot:

-- put cursor at one corner of the intended screen shot
-- hold down Command and Shift keys simultaneously
-- hit "4" and
-- then use the mouse's left button to adjust/drag the crop box
-- when you release the mouse, the image will go to your desktop, where you can pull it up and rename it etc..

Keyboard shortcuts [one of many sites showing]:

Thanks again Gene,

Peter

Hi, Air forums needs to get rid of this Captcha thing. I'm not going to type a full page response to help a fellow member and do it again when this Captcha thing losses my post. Very irritating!

I also got Captcha'd again recently, but fortunately was able to go Back and retrieve the text from the Message composition box. The selection of photo images to prove I was not a robot seemed clearer and easier to choose ("street sign" as I recall), but my choices were apparently wrong, as I ended up at the blank white screen again.

There has to be a better way, but I won't repeat suggestions made already.

Good morning Janet! Was this Captcha demon toggled on to "attack mode" overnight? It jumped on me early this morning, and would not let go!

Ouch !!!

I logged out, cleaned Internet cache, deleted cookies, wiped history clean, re-booted Firefox, and
.
.
.
.
.
. . . the Captcha juggernaut seemed to recognize me right away after I logged back in again.

Is it using my personal IP address to trigger the next attack?

If so, couldn't you guys re-program the beast with "safe" IP addresses on a case-by-case basis?

Or is it possible that some other Internet Dark Side of The Force power could hide behind the mask of my IP address?

This morning's session -- trying to edit a detailed post with links to an AS owner's manual and to a parts book -- became much more difficult with each Captcha lynching.

I wish there were a better way . . .

Have a good weekend, and thanks again for a great site -- still!

Peter

Your IP address is issued to your cable modem by your ISP from their cache of available IPs. It is yours for 24 hours and then it can be renewed again. If not renewed because it was assigned to another machine, you would get a different IP (dynamic IP assignment). The IP on your laptop/PC/MAC is an internal IP but when it goes out through the cable modem, it goes as the modem's IP. That way you can have numerous internal IPs for your Internet capable devices but you appear as the same IP on the Internet.

Since you may or may not keep the same IP, someone else using the same ISP as you could be using it to attack a site. They could use that IP to control someone else's equipment and appear as them to attack a site from a completely different ISP.

The bottom line is that the IP address is not a reliable source of information for who you really are. Every networked device has a MAC (machine) address that is included in the NIC/LAN card. Even this can be changed simply by changing the card.

Having people create an account at a site is better but unless there is some kind of challenge (like when you go to a banking site) to enter a code that was emailed or texted to you, even this can be hacked.

It is a constant challenge for sites to protect themselves from malicious people who have nothing better to do than cause destruction. I agree the CAPTCHA is a pain but it does help keep the site safer.

One feature that might be beneficial to everyone is to add a third button on the editor to 'COPY to Buffer' before pushing the submit or preview posts, just in case you get the white screen.
