The site has undergone a number of Directed Denial of Service [DDOS] attacks in the last year or so (from my observation as a user -- I have no connection to the site administration), and when those DDOS "bad robots" find an opening into this site's servers, they can bombard the site with so much, that the site becomes inoperable for normal functions. AirForums is not alone in dealing with this Internet nonsense by any means, but it requires constant attention and perseverance. It is also expensive from an IT perspective.

I trust -- entirely -- that the site admins and mods are doing their best to let our experience be as seamless as possible.

A DDOS attack may seem like a trivial issue (not a "stealing national security files" threat), but it is still a total pain in the butt to deal with.

A hearty thank you, once again, is due to AirForums IMO.

Cheers,

Peter

Captcha silliness

In responding to Ken -- i'm perplexed why Captcha is used so often when it does not pertain to national security. I run into this on many benign sites and am also kicked off bc of the unreadability of the Captcha. Lately i've also encountered "how many images contain flowers, etc" and some images are too small to determine whats in them. Surely if websites want to block spam, there can be another way. I have since refused to return to websites that use these as i'm always getting kicked off anyway.

Porn sites and other advertisers use robots to post in unprotected sites.

Re: CAPTCHA "I'm not a robot"

The problem is that the robots can build new accounts faster than humans can find and kill the bogus accounts.

Captcha is not wonderful, but it does slow the buggers down a lot.

Keep in mind that volunteers, no matter how many, cannot be expected to spend all their waking hours trying to kill thousands of bogus accounts that could be loaded per HOUR. It's just not possible.

I just got Captcha'd again drafting a long reply with some copy and paste from a PDF, and did not guess correctly about lawns, store fronts etc.. Hit the Captcha dead end blank screen.

So, I hit the Back button on my browser until I saw the draft text in the Reply box, then Edit (or right mouse click) and Select All, then Copy.

Then logged out of AirFor, which cleared cookies which IMO can lead to Captcha, then logged back in, replied to the thread, and hit Paste in the reply text box. Convoluted, but I had forgotten to draft the reply in Word first.

There has to be an easier way.

Could the site remember us by our IP address, if we gave permission for this, to avoid Captcha because we have a "safe" IP address? [After all, isn't this part of the Captcha process -- remembering our IP address for each login?]

I finally got a CAPTCHA but it wasn't a long post. I had left the room for a while before posting, came back and finished and pressed Preview. I got CAPTCHA, just had to check a box but there wasn't anything on the screen after that, totally white. I clicked the back button and got back to the editor but my most recent entries were gone. I had to type it all in again.

So taking a long time will make CAPTCHA appear also. Best to select all your text and CTRL-C to copy it in case it disappears.

If your going to make a long post or take a lot of time doing it. Why not create the post on your desk top using text edit then drag and drop the creation here and post it.

I've been having the CAPTCHA problem for months, & I experience it not posting the message even when answering correctly - instead just going to a blank page, then I have to go back & redo the entire message over from a fresh click on reply in the topic (I started saving text to a text doc for back-up).

The way the Captcha is supposed to work, is that you click the box & get a check, but apparently they're so overloaded, then instead you get a "sorry we couldn't connect" & then you get the maddening pix tests!

When I did a "contact us" message to the site owners, whoever responded just said they're having problems with bots, but never said that they would fix it!

IMHO - the site owners need to get a better bot check provider, or members will eventually leave if it gets too bad, & then they'll lose their advertisers!

OP Phoenix was probably replying to one of my TMI messages!
Skip - I had to erase the prior reply too in order to get under the word/character count, with only the reply text.

Not a Happy Camper on this!
Tom

See how reCAPTCHA is evolving to make it easier for humans and harder for bots:

reCAPTCHA: Easy for humans, hard for bots

Yes, that's the problem here... looks like the problem is not reCAPTCHA, but how the website responds after you complete answering reCAPTCHA. When finishing responding to reCAPTCHA, you should not be stranded on a blank, white page! You should then be able to proceed in accomplishing your sending of a message or post.

This seems to be an issue that the site's Tech Support people need to look at.

The new reCAPTCHA uses a Risk Analysis Engine that makes it easier on humans and harder on bots, as seen in the video above.
