Political ads?

Discussion of politics is a no no here. How come I keep getting political ads in the block at the top of the page?

And why are politics in signatures tolerated?

The way it was explained to me is, it's an algorithm.

Your device 'remembers' where you have been or what has appeared on your device and then sends you data that it thinks may be of interest to you.

The ads I get are truck ads, kitchen appliance ads etc. because we have been in the market on-line for these products. Even when we order dog supplies and the like, we get automatic ads about trucks. Go figure.

I keep seeing hardware, camping equipment, trailer parts and the like. Guess I surf all the right sites.

I keep getting invitations to join MENSA INTERNATIONAL.... whatever that is..

Awchief, try running a FULL SCAN with your antivirus program...and THEN full scan with your Windows Defender (if you are running Win 10). Defender found two more that all the antivirus programs I ran failed to find, and it was those two that made all the difference. Warning: Defender took over 5 hours to completely scan and clean up my computer. It's a very thorough scan.

I did that and not only did all the pop up ads go away, my computer sped up an amazing amount.

You might try installing an ad blocker. Ask a young person or tech person if you're not sure how to do this. But I agree. Threads get closed down if they become too politicized, so I am not sure why we should be viewing them here.

I'm not a young person.
I downloaded then change my preferred browser from Edge to Mozilla (free).
I changed my preferred search engine from Bing to Google.
I downloaded AdBlocPlus (free). It will not work with Edge.
Since I did this I see no popup ads. (except within my free Yahoo email pages. Wish I could figure out how to get rid of these too)

add edit:
Also I think I read somewhere that supporting members see fewer advertisements.
Maybe that is why there is a difference.

If you were a supporting member, you get way less ads.

If you occasionally dump your browsing file and cookie folder, that will eliminate a lot of the pop-ups. A program like CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/promo/cclean...FQMJaQodf34Ing) will help you do this. The more you browse, they more you will get.

Appreciate all the suggestions. But, guess I should of made it clear that I primarily use an iPad. Different kettle of fish from windows users.
I do not mind getting normal ads, just ones that are blatantly against the rules here. For what it is worth I have not had any repeats since my original post.

I use an IPad exclusively and don't have a problem with political ads.

I do believe membership here provides some protection from the level and type of ads one receives...

A younger technophile family member put 2 ad blockers on my computer: Adblock Plus and uBlock Origin. Just now it looks like Adblock nabbed two ads and uBlock got 18 of them. I still see the ones AS wants to include, like for AS service people and RV-related travel articles. But not the political ads or other commercials.

Some ads are displayed based on stuff you've viewed elsewhere online. If you were shopping for new tires, you might see tire ads for a time and if you were reading news headlines about current events you might see related content ads.

I did. The signature is gone but the political avatar is still there. Not interested in seeing 2nd amendment crap every time I view the discussion forum.

IPAD and Apple computers and phones still save "cookies" from where you visited on the web. You can clear them from your browser by going to settings, HISTORY and selectively or totally picking what you want to clean out. They also get viruses but not as frequently as the swiss cheesy Windows software
TOR browsers are used by many people, based on Mozilla Firefox, they afford you the safest, most secure method of browsing. They typically get rid of the traces of where you have been all the time you are on the internet. Makes for good surfing of the Dark Web...
