Photo clean-up . . .

My stats sheet shows the forums at 27,552 strong with 37,556 threads and 529,966 posts. Thatís a lot of people and a lot of data. It would seem logical that the speed of access could increase if we managed unused or un-accessed uploads.

So, when is it time to remove uploaded pictures? Should we delete pictures we uploaded that havenít been accessed in the last three months or the last six months or the last Ö..?

Is there a file management recommendation?

Ya' know what? That's something I'd never even come close to thinking about unless I had too much to drink. That said, the world is probably a better place with more folks like you and less than like me...

And come to think about it, yeah moderators, like just what he said! That servers' gotta be taking on some weight! Y'all just 'dump' old threads that have been inactive for "X" # of decades?

... or is there something else, more omnious going on that would change the harmonic balance of power within the universe were it to be divulged? It IS the Airstream forums, afterall...

The idea of the "old stuff" hanging around is more of a cache of information for later forums users to (hopefully) find by searching. The picture you took of the rusty dump valve may be indispensable to someone in another 5 years trying to repair theirs.

Clearly many pictures (particularly the ones referenced in a thread) should not be deleted. But I wonder how many of the pictures we upload represent our pride-of-ownership rather than help document a repair or construction process that others can use sometime . . .

I look at other peoples pictures and realize many are similar to mine. These are the pictures I am asking about . . . it just seems responsible to delete these if it will result in an improved server performance, particularly if nobody has looked at them for 10 or more months.

It is kind of tough to decide. There are a lot of older threads out there that are really invaluable for repair and maintenance.

On Sunday I just referenced a June 2002 and a July 2003 thread. A couple days before that I assisted a member with a mid-300 AIR number to renew his password and get going here again. It's impossible to judge what goes and what stays. And if we presumed to have those answers? Imagine the outcry when member's post numbers start going down.

Housekeeping is done at various levels. An in depth discussion does not change the conclusion -- this number of members, threads & posts does not extend search times significantly.

I wouldn't suggest deleting a thread . . . just pictures not linked to a thread that have not been accessed in a long time. . .

The last software upgrade makes it easy to see who has uploaded pictures. It's surprising to see the number of members that have no pictures!

I just deleted three of my pictures that were of no apparent value and moved the rest to the correct category. So, I guess my file clean-up work is done . . .

this is only true for pix in the 'member photos' section.

for example mine should show ZERO...

but in fact i've uploaded 100s of pix.

that are IN posts and the count of those isn't obvious from profile info.

as long as there is server space i'm for leaving all the pix and words in...

even the notion of 'cleaning up' threads is tricky and time consuming.

and creating MORE subheadings to further sort out posts/topics/threads doesn't mean folks will LOOK in the right spot.

just as in the larger universe, entropy happens.

cheers

with growing technology, dropping old posts to improve system speed is like not filling your wiper tank to save fuel on you Ford F450.

I was going to suggest deleting extra punctuation and space between paragraphs. But then a mysterious envelope arrived by courier that effectively doubles my annual moderator income. I'm easy to get along with...

Could a moderator please change the title of this tread to "Picture clean-up"?

The point was to address management of picture uploads, not treads or thread postings.

Thanks.

You know, when many run out of space for 'stuff' they find a place in the garage rafters... assemble another storage shed... rent a storage locker...I get frustrated when I can't find something that I had a long time ago, "Did I throw that out in '98 ?"...Nah, there is always another place to store it. Besides after 22 years in the same house we have decided to will it all to the kids. After all some of it IS THEIRS anyway. I don't throw 2 many things away. A couple of years ago our 1978 tax records really came in handy for compiling our SS records. Yeah, I am a little overboard but if there is no problems in the short horizon I say keep the old stuff. Besides 2air said it best, "I like digging thru old picture boxes and finding stuff......"

Usually, when a person doen't clean shop, they wind up buying something they know they already have because they can't find it . . .

That said, my real job includes managing a network. I watch people not manage their computer 'stuff', and the next thing I know, the backup process takes more than 24 hours to complete, which in turn makes things start to crawl.

Yea, hard disk space is very cheap now days, but there is much more to it than just hard disk: servers with lots of expensive memory, SAN's, dual fiber backbones, backup servers, new and faster backup soft and hardware: it all comes at a cost.

Clearly this site provides an archive service we all love . . . I had no intention to open a can of worms here . . . I simply wanted to know if a file management policy existed, and if so, what it entailed.

Why? Because in reality, I have 100's of pictures that document the rebuild of my Airstream, but only a few have be seen here . . . all of us that have done a complete restoration screen the pictures we post! I try to upload the pictures that are most useful to everyone, but sometimes I don't get it right. Some pictures just don't get looked at . . . they could be deleted and nobody would care!
