Alumi-Not, -naut, or -naught, I am not sure we need to see each others Karma rating. Keeping it private is just fine. Making it visible is just a way to make those that have low Karma ratings feel inferior and perhaps unecessarily inflates the ego's of those with higher Karma ratings. The number of posts does a good enough job showing who participates how much on the forums, because post count seems to have a significant correlation to Karma rating. It appears like you need to 1000+ posts to get the top Karma rating.

Just one user's opinion.

P.S. And wouldn't an Argonaut be someone on a quest to obtain an Argosy or perhaps someone on a quest in an Argosy?

Yes, and his name would be Jason.

It also says you can Limit the usage of visitor messages to just the mods and your contacts. If I did this, would "nonfriends" (I need a better term here) still be able to view what's going on? Is it possible with this system to have a bunch of mini, private forums or Social Groups like the Capetown to Cairo forum?

Dennis, I noticed that too. A workaround is to go to an individual's profile page and look up at the URL -- their membership number is within the URL.

Couldn't help but notice that the "warning" meter is now gone. A really good thing in my humble opinion. Keeps things on a positive note.

This is a great place with many great members and staff. Keep on the sunny side, eh?

Thanx for the upgrades. Still not sure I understand the new rating/karma system…it seems to be changing by the day? Yesterday I had a bunch of green “squares” on my bar, today it’s only one square? Did I make somebody mad?
Still would like to see a “Date Started” on the header of all threads along with the current Thread/Thread Starter. This really helps save time in not looking at threads that were started long ago…many other forums have this, can’t we? I feel so deprived? Or is that depraved?

Hey! I've lost my Karma rating, too. What did I do to make everybody mad at me?

No one is mad... Everyone's karma scores are lower. But they are proportionally lower so.... if you had a fairly high score before the change, you still have a high score. The scale is just different now.

A new member has 0 karma and a really high karma number would be around 100.

...in proportion to the increase in gas prices??

I'm sure mad!

Gasoline - up
Karma - down

... not a good spring for Airstreamers

Hey, think of this as one thing that is not being hit with inflation these days.

I'll explain it one more time. Before the system used a crazy algorithm to calculate how many karma points a member got based on the "influence" of the person giving the karma. The "influence" was based on the tenure of the person here on the forums, the amount of posts they had made and the amount of karma they themselves had at the time they were giving karma. It was really kludgy because a new member with one post could easily become more influential then a member who had been here for years and had 500 posts. The reason for this was that a very influential member could have given them that karma and transfered to them many karma points thus increasing their influence because your total karma points were part of the influence calculation. Confusing? YES!

The way the system was setup causes it to run wild after scores start to escalate and ultimately cause the system to be useless. I have seen newbies go from 0 to 25,000 karma points on other sites and this was the path we were headed down. So now each time you get karma you get 1 point. No karma was lost, everyone just got the 1 point for each karma you were given in the past.

This evens the playing field and makes the system more fair. It also allows us to use this metric for possible "bonuses" that might be given in the future to our best members. So 1 point per karma is the new system, it's very simple and easy to use.

Yes indeed, I had some tremendous karma points because a handful of VERY well-established and influential posters including several mods had graciously given me just a little bit of karma.

I looked like the King Of The World even thouh I am very new around here. Don't get me wrong, it was a great ride while it lasted, I partied like a rock star and all, as long as I could. It was beautiful, man.

But the new system is far more equitable and fair. Thanks for the explanation, and folks will get used to it in time.

What's the difference between a "Soft Delete" and a "Hard Delete" regarding the visitor messages?

( Humorous answers are always appreciated but humorous AND informative answers score the highest points.)

I soft deleted most of my messages yesterday and now my site looks awful.
Should I have been harder on my friends?

Also, the first message I received from another member is apparently on page 2 of my messages but every time I click on the number "2" I get sent to the forums page which is still too big for my screen.

And is this the right place to request that the random photos at the top of the portal page come back?
I loved that feature and I know I wasn't the only one.

Thanks

A soft delete leaves the results that you have now. The messages aren't gone forever - by checking the message box and selecting "Undelete message" from the drop-down, you can display the message again.

A hard delete ("Physically Remove") means the message is gone forever.

I either no longer have that option (because it's too late perhaps) or I'm just blind. The only message box I can see is by the only visitor message I didn't delete.

May I also second this idea. I understand advertising is paying for that space but that feature cause members to LOOK at other members pictures. If a picture caught someones attention they were likely to look at a members other pictures.

With out some stimulus of this nature the pictures would be unknown to most.

still unable to see new posts

I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but I still get a message that you all are upgrading software whenever I try to click on new posts or try to see todays posts in the quick links.

I miss not being able to just click and read... I would surely appreciate someone checking this out...

Respectfully,

Reganzo
