New ads...

Our communtiy is participating in a beta advertising program. The new ad formats are called intermission ads and basically once per day you are shown a website. User experience is a top priority. Intermission Ads are never shown to a user on their first visit to a site, and are never shown to the same user more than once per 24-hours. It is easy to instantly close an Intermission, should the user choose to.

This next week we will install a system to that will prevent these ads from showing based on various metrics. The goal is to not show these ads to the members that meet certain requirements as far as contributing to the community. Look for an updated announcement on that towards mid-week...

Please post your comments and concerns to this discussion.

I got into one of those ads yesterday, I had to shut down my browser to get rid of it. It sucked! I hope this doesnt mean that I can look forward to this every day now . I know it cost money to make this thing go but that epsiode if repeated would drive me away.

I agree and I don't want to be a stick in the mud but we have google ads on the forums already. This intermission ad thing is an affront to me. I look around in life and every available space we look at is becoming an ad. I hope these forums do not.

Adbrite's web site seems to show me a bunch of internet entrepreneurs who are actually quite proud of the amount of money they expect to make from the intermission ad. This is what these forums are to become?

This could give these forums a bad name. 10000 plus sitting ducks who have to look at an ad to use the forums? Why not just ask for a dollar a month to participate if that's what it takes to not have ads. I'd pay....

Intermission Ad

Just had one pop up and block my entire screen. I had to shut down to get rid of it. It would not let me X it off. Let's make it a rule that we do not do any business with any company that uses these intrusive ads.

Wow - first pressure to post when you might not have something to say, and now this.... If this is a precursor of things to come, then I don't intend to visit the site as often.

Course, that means I'll probably try to visit the site one day, only to find that my account has been deactivated because I haven't been "contributing."

65,

That's how adbrite's "intermission ad" works.

For everybody else, if you are using firefox, you should be able to use the adblock extension to block the adbrite ads altogether. You can also block the google content as well.

I am now and I have no google stuff and have had no adbrite content pop up.

Click the picture below to see my screen.

From AdBrite's web site....

Will visitors get annoyed?
User experience is a top priority. Intermission Ads are never shown to a user on their first visit to a site, and are never shown to the same user more than once per 24-hours. This means that the user is already engaged with the website before seeing an Intermission, and won’t be turned off by a full-page ad. We make it easy to instantly close an Intermission, should the user choose to.

Everytime I get something like this, I send an email to the advertiser (Net Zero this time) and tell them what I think of them . I also state that their action has made me decide to never use their product. If enough people do this they might pull their adds and this thing might go away.

Tools > options> block pop ups (make sure and check the allowed sections to make sure they have snuck around your defences)

Firefox

Firefox with the Adblock extension will keep things nice and quiet. It blocks scripts and images.

Tools>Extensions>Get More Extensions. The window that opens up has Adblock about a third of the way down...

The ads are sent through Adbrite. It is processed through the forums. It helps offset the cost of operating the forums.

65, I used the following to block ads so far:
*adbrite*
*extreme-dm*
*alexa*
*googlesyndication*

Enter those exactly as you see written and that will keep things quiet while still allowing the google maps thing to work.
