Lubricating Main Door Hinges
A/S Question
Hinges are creaking and need to be lubed. Have heard not to use WD-40 as it leaves a film. What is best product to buy and use for this application.
Thanks, Mike

Is there anything related to lubrication for which silicone spray should not be used? It seems to be the go to solution on anything needing lubrication.

I use dry lube. Mountain bike dry chain lube is my go to wherever I don't want to attract dust and grime.

Try Rem-Oil. It's much better than WD-40 and seems to hold up better (i.e., lasts longer) than silicone sprays.

WD to clean only. Gun oil made to handle environmentals. Also, I use LPS 2.. it is an industrial lube, spray and bulk. Also good for MC cables.. after WD clean and flush.
LPS works on weapons too... the 1 is light.. 2 then 3 heavier weights. The 3 stays on longer so fewer dribbles. Just wipe off to keep clean.
There is now Teflon spray but I cannot say how that works on hinges.

We use Houdini, a professional lock lubricant.

Three in One oil?
I always seem to have a can sitting around. Can seals tight.
The problem with a spray is a hinge needs for the lube to find it's way down into the hidden recesses of the pin. I like a very light oil, including a gun oil like Eezox.

As said, WD-40 is not a lubricant. Silcone is a short lived one. That being said, it's pretty easy to lube the hinges fairly often.
I use Corrosion-X.

Don't use silicone around areas you may later want to paint, clear coat, or seal. It will have to be abraded off, unless a lot of time passes for the elements to dissipate it.
