Kill File?

Is there a way to exclude certain threads and/or Forums from the Portal display?

"Kill file." Wow, that's a throwback. Way long ago when a young Bill Gates and crew wrote the code for Radio Shack's version of DOS (called "TRS-DOS"), the delete file command was "kill X." Apparently folks didn't appreciate it too much.

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack this thread. And, no, I don't think there is a way to exclude threads in the direct sense that you mean it! (But maybe I'm mistaken, too.)

In the user CP there is the default age cutoff for threads feature and/or you can subscribe only to the threads you are interested in.

The KILL file FAQ

rn KILL file FAQ

General information
===================
1. What is a KILL file? What does it do?

A KILL file is a way of recording what articles you want to kill (skip
over). Rn, trn, and strn all support killfiles. Xrn has some support for
killfiles, but the support is limited; nothing in here is guaranteed to work
for xrn. See the xrn man page.
To kill articles, you specify criteria to use to kill them: a subject line,
a part of a subject line, articles from one poster or one site, cross-
posted articles, or follow-ups to other articles. You can also kill articles
with a particular string in the article.

2. What's the difference between a 'local' KILL file and a 'global'

Yeah, I know about that, unfortunately it won't do what I want.

Well, see there? I was wrong. Wouldn't have been the first time. And, heaven knows, if it's the last time, I probably don't have much longer to live!

I didn't intend to be critical, I just wanted to clarify what I was talking about.

Hey, absolutely no offense taken! (I didn't think your response was critical in the first place!)

So am I missing something? Are the topic names so horrible to read that it is too much to just scroll right past them? But I don't use the portal page, I use the new posts page. Does that make a difference?

I to wonder what I am missing. It is like TV change the channel or skip it. I do skip a lot of threads, so maybe it would be better not to see them at all.

Yeah that makes sense. And someday I am going to take all the subscription channel listings out of my Dish remote menu that we don't get...someday. That makes sense. Thanks.

I don't think there is a way to do this. You can remove e-mail notices of threads - but there is no way to exclude a thread from view in this version of vbulletin, that I am aware of.

Of course it is not horrible. I was merely inquiring about software capabilities.

But OTOH, the portal display shows the 30 most recently active threads. When there are four active threads on basically the same topic which has been beat to death, I would have liked to be able to exclude them and then see which threads have been active.

And OBTW, I always delete unwanted channels from my program guide.
