Words keep developing and evolving to mean one thing, then changed to mean something else. This is how language has been for centuries. We change, words change, spelling changes, and sometimes definitions change. An example would be the word gay. I was brought with the understanding it was defined as happy, party, upbeat, etc. The now generation today define it other terms. Karma is a great word. I felt happy to have some one send me good Karma. I looked at the word as a postive lift. Even though I was presented with good Karma in airstream forms. It was given to me at a time I needed it.

Quite true Brian. Another example is the (non-)word "irregardless." I hate this word, it's an irrational pet peeve. People use it instead of the proper word which is "regardless" or perhaps they should use "irrespective" in some instances. But instead they use the (non-)word "irregardless." Drives me batty.

HOWEVER, this (non-)word can now be found in Webster's dictionary. They specify that it is an "irregular" usage or something like that, but twenty years ago you wouldn't even find it in the pages of that reference. Twenty years from now, it will probably not have any such "irregular usage" qualifier, and a (non-)word will have become a "real" word.

So, there you have it. Languages evolve whether we want them to or not.

On that thoughtful note, Karma to All and to All a Good Night!

If we are offending religilious sensibilities, even without intending to, then I think we should find another term to use for krma. I agree with 2air on this one.

Let's dig into the airstream lexicon and find another word. Or drop the idea and just let people send a "PM of appreciation".

That's my vote.

Fair enough, how 'bout we call it "Giving away Wallys."

I give everyone on this thread three humongous Wallys.

Free Wallys For All!

(Hopefully this blatant Wally reference will not offend SOB owners )

Someone say EVOLUTION?????

Some call it Hi-Jacking - I call it "thread creep". A good example is how this one went from the posted topic of Karma to the mis-usage and now acceptance of the evolution of the english language.

Does make reading these threads interesting - I am on the guilty side of this by the way. One way of avoiding this trap is to use the original topic somewhere in your hi-jacking post. Karma to ya......

Speaking of driving someone batty. It drives me crazy when people talk about their "hot water heaters". Why would anyone want to heat hot water? It is a "water heater" people.

(I bet I don't get any Karma for that.)

If the Pope gives Karma in the woods, will the Bear find it politically correct?

I think Timothy Leary summed it up quite well=
"Live and let Live"

as far as giving out the sissy hat thing- I'm not a wally kind of guy and from the poll here on the forum neither are a majority of members here. All his efforts proved him to be a good salesman- a trailer pimp.
The water coming out of my tap is 55F. Is that hot or cold? I'm heating up that water to have my first cup o joe. I know that when the kettle whistles the water is hot.
I also know a hot thread when I see one- this one is not there yet.

Wow, so even suggesting Wallys as a karma alternative could potentially offend some folks.

I give up. I'm taking my Karma and going home.

I am a deeply religious person and don't believe in such superstitions as luck, but I still find myself wishing people "good luck" on their endeavors because that is what our popular culture recognizes as religious neutral rather than to wish God's blessings on those endeavors.

Recently, I made the comment that since I moved to a new parking deck that recently opened near my office no one had broken into my truck. My boss turned and knocked on a wooden door behind him...two days later someone broke out the rear window of my truck in this new parking deck causing more than $1,000 in damage and took nothing as I keep nothing of value in my truck since it has been broken into several times. Don't park in downtown Atlanta folks...anywhere! They also broke into several other vehicles parked near mine and stole one Jeep Cherokee that was parked across the aisle from me (guess I was lucky after all ). I told my boss he didn't knock hard enough . Did I think knocking on wood would have reversed the "bad Karma" of speaking about no break-ins at the new deck? My religious beliefs rejects such superstitions. But popular culture has adopted them as social morays and joking about them is common fodder in most offices.

I think we infuse Judeo-Christian concepts into the American lexicon in the same way. We routinely say, "God bless you", when someone sneezes, but are we truly wishing for God's blessings or just being polite? I certainly see 2air's point of view, but has this issue gone beyond the ability to change the software? Can we change the iconography of the software that runs this forum to send someone a can of Nu-Vite or polish one of their panels, etc. in stead of using the term "send karma"? Will the software allow the webmaster to do this? If so, I'm all for sending some "good potluck dishes" someone's way and being religious neutral.

I see where you're coming from, but, what about the folks that use Southern Shine or Diamond Brite instead of Nu-vite? I'm not sure they'd appreciate being sent a can of Nu-vite as a gesture of thanks or goodwill.

What about the people who don't polish at all? A well-intentioned "polished panel" might constitue the ultimate insult to a person of natural patina persuasion.

And what about the folks who can't stand potlucks? I mean, how many times can one person eat Aunt Ovinia's olive loaf and not get ill??

Well, I guess we will never get it right.
