How to search the forum

There are a couple of ways to search the forum. If you have a question we recommend that you search before posting. There's a fair chance that we have a several posts about your topic of interest.

The Forums search tool found on the upper blue nav bar is fairly easy to use and really quick. Our search tool searches for key words and you have a choice to search for threads or posts. Consider using the advanced search function to narrow down your choices. You must be logged into the forums to use the search tool.

Search using Google's search tool for a more accurate result.
You can search only this forum using google. To do this, open a google search window in your browser and key in your seach parameters, leave a space and then type site:www.airforums.com.

Example: If you want to find info about red bearing grease your search would look like this:
red grease site:www.airforums.com Don't forget to hit enter.

Janet,

While I do not expect you to know the answer to my question, perhaps you could pose it in the Moderator's Forum where Andy R might see it:

Why does vBulletin have such a poor search engine?

I think it is because the creators want people to ask the same old questions. Asking questions generates traffic. Traffic generates revenue when Google ads are involved.

But not searching first sure puts a bee in the bonnet of a few folks...

Tom, lots of people complain about the search feature of vBulletin. Hopefully they will come out with a better system in their future releases. I plan to integrate a Google search into the site soon. Then we will need to make the search box easier to find to try encourage people to use it.

may be a dumb question

Should I use "+" or "&" signs between words to do a multiple-word-specific search? For example, I want to search for "wheel well" but not have every post/thread come up with the word "wheel" in it, only "wheel well". Would I use "wheel+well" or something like that?

Couldn't find an answer to this searching.

thanks,

fotochop

If you want to search AIR for "wheel well" your google search would look like this:
"wheel well" site:www.airforums.com

You could also use the google advanced search page
which will allow the kind of search you want and you can specify that it only searches this site.

Google has some nifty tips for searching using the advanced page and even more info on the basics of searching here

Finally - check out the google cheat sheet.
Print this and stick it to the corner of your monitor.

The vbulletin advanced search only searches key words and gets somewhat befuddled when you add punctuation.

without going to the 'google' approach, here is another suggestion...

find a specific subform, like running gear or frames or floors or something under exterior restoration, or even a specific model/year...

or limit the search to a well known USER restoration thread like the ones from uwe or norcal bambi,

or an 'expert like inlandandy...

then go to advanced search....

in advanced search enter 'wheel' only or 'wheel well'.

well only won't search easily because it's too common and short of a word like 'if'...

limit the search to ONLY one or 2 of your preselected subforums or members...

http://www.airforums.com/forums/sear...earchid=902894

you can also limit the search to theads with only wheel well in the TITLE

and don't forget the common mis usages, like wheelwell....

and bam!!!!!

cheers

Like 2air sez. Advanced Search. Really helps to remember somebody who posted in a thread. Switch "Sort results by" to 'Relevancy.' Try it alternately with 'Show Results as' posts and then threads. That helps sort through threads with a lot of responses.

Earlier this evening I tried to search for the member who had a photo thread about transporting his vintage Airstream to Vancouver Island on a small barge or ferry. I failed miserably...

I can't get the search to work. I type in a name and it doesn't do anything. What's up?
