defintions

Is there anywhere on the fourm that gives definitions for all the initials used as shortcuts such as "lol" ??????????

I thought "lol" was lots of luck and now find out it means laughing out loud.
Hope I haven't hurt anyones feelings and wasn't intending to be laughing. Guess if I had some teenagers around I would be up to date.

Garry

LOL = Laugh Out Loud
ROTFLMAO = Rolling On The Floor Laughing My @$$ Off
IMHO = In My Humble Opinion
OTOH = On The Other Hand

If you look around on the net, you can find lists of definitions, for these and others... here's one site:

ESO This is a favorite where I work. I repair cell phones...I repair more users then cell phone actually. Usualy goes something like What's wrong with that phone? ESO problem. "Equipment Smarter then Operator".
RTFM Is another. "RTFM problem with this one". Read the Furnished Manual The F-Bomb can be substituted LOL.

Hmm I have a few but some are a little more spicy then others. I hang around some fairly juvinile sites.

That's a good site that was posted. It will keep you from going "WTF?"

Smilies, Emoticons & Shortcut History Trivia

For those wandering, the smilies, shortcut symbols and emoticons (emotion icons) genesis stems from the formative days of America Online's chat rooms and instant messaging back in the late 80's way before it was known as AOL. You could see this communication form growing daily in the rush to inventiveness by members. Compuserve, GEnie, Usenet, the rest of the Internet and other venues never quite progressed to AOL's stage at that time. Until AOL came along, being online was pretty much academic and computer tech oriented. There used to be a lot of derision about this form of communications in those days by the other venues. I know as I was there in the formative days of Compuserve, GEnie and AOL all dedicated services outside the Internet.

Since, shortcuts have become pretty much universal across the Internet. Online life started migrating to the Internet in earnest late 1994 through 1997. It took a while for message boards to mature in use like this one on the web. I think the turning point was about 1999.

ROTFLOL was the granddaddy of the Rolling On The Floor emoticons when Laughing Out Loud was not loud enough. I believe I was present in a chat room when it was first used and I think I know who that creator was. That was 15 years ago. No, it was not me. I still have over a thousand floppy disks of which many were logged chat room sessions when I was an AOL Forum Leader. Now I don't even have a floppy disk drive to check them out.

I think it would be good if this forum had a list all of its own. You could click on one link and view the definitions. At times the meanings of some of the simplest acronyms skip over me.

59, in the two-way radio business we use the term "DFO", as in "The problem was caused by a DFO error."

DFO= Dumb (fill in the blank) Operator

I'm in the network admin. business, and I, too, fix more users than computers. One of our favorite error codes is "identification: one zero T".....or ID10T. it is by far, the most common computer problem that we encounter......
