Rivet AIR Forums - Site updates and new look

After many years AIR Forums is getting an updated look and a few new features. Beginning sometime Thursday evening 8/18/11 you should see a new look when you log in. The forum interface will remain the same but the look will be updated. A nice improvement will be new drop down menus near the top of the page that will make site navigation easier and more prominently feature rallies and events. In the next day you may see the beginnings of this change with page layout moving a bit and ask for your patience while we're under renovation.

We don't anticipated being offline during this update. We are very excited with the impending changes and hope you will be as well. Here's a sneak peak at the portal page and the forum page (still in draft form).

Janet how about a top of the page button at the bottom of each thread page. That way when done reading a page it would be easier to select a new page.

So... We're going with a more "wide-body" look? Kewl!

revamps are always fun.

forgive me if this is available & i've just never found it but:
on my other favorite forum, my subscribed threads (and if i post to something it's automatically subscribed) show up at the top of the page if there are new posts. i love that.

and along with that, once i've clicked on ANY thread, subscribed or not, there is a button that says "skip to new." (the oldest posts are at the top.) that way i can read from top to bottom rather than the other way.

the forum i'm talking about is Tips and Advice on Outdoor Gardening, Flower Gardens, Plants, & Seeds - Dave's Garden if anyone is interested in looking at how the threads are managed.

The image in the header will be changed periodically and the goal is to use member pics. If you have one you love let us know. It will need to be sort of plain on the left side so the logo won't interfere with that part of the image and it will be cropped to be very wide and not very tall. We can crop a large image but it's important to remember that much of the photo may not be used. Here's an example of how an image might be cropped:

Thumbs down geek soup vs. leave well enough alone

While hoping it is harmless and inconsequential, just for appearance sake;

IMHO.....too many geeks often ruin the soup.

Geek soup often brings awful digestion probs for the poor hapless and (at the geeks mercy) regular folk.

My experience here is that you in-chargers are gonna do whatever you find entertaining to yourselves in spite of the feelings of the poor hapless.
Was there a demand or request for a change? or did you all just assume that the membership was getting bored with the status quo?
Is there some thought this tinkering will bring back those many forum members that seem to have lost interest? If so I am all for it.

Is this just cosmetic or is there some technical must for it? I do understand that periodic site maintenance is necessary.

My main concern for anything that happens here is simply the preservation of the existing data here. And that it be relative easy to find and that the URLs to it be NOT altered.
However I do recall info losses (permanent) after at least one prior forum tinkering. Not sure if that was for real maintenance purpose or just to introduce some new geek-toy feature.

I will of course do my best to "figger" it all out once it is imposed upon us. And in the event it makes this a better place, I will be pleased to stand corrected from my doubts.

It looks good, and I agree with the idea of a navigation button, (bottom back to top).

thanks for all the hard work you put into this for all of us to enjoy.
