Water Heater for '66 Caravel: Model?

The few posts I've seen about replacing a water heater in a Caravel seem to conclude Atwood, not Suburban. Anyone have a specific MODEL Atwood heater that works well with a '66 Caravel (i.e, good fit) ?? Thanks in advance.

Six or ten gallon?

Water Heater

Andy, I guess six gals. I think the original in it now is five. Don't want anything that I have to chop up the trailer to make fit.

Any Atwood 6 gal water heater will fit, propane only or Direct Spark Ignition. You will have to run 12 volts to the unit and locate a switch somewhere if you put the DSI one in, but it sure is more convenient than going outside to light it.

The propane inlet location will be different though. You will have to either re locate the line to come into the new place above the floor or drill a new hole in the new heater and move the fittings to use the old gas inlet pipe location. I think it is better to relocate the pipe to the new location, but that is up to you.

I have an Atwood 6 gal. electronic ignition planned for the Caravel and it looks like I will have to trim the opening in the trailer a bit, but no real problems for a slide in fit. The gas line comes in the side rather than the bottom as on the old models, but with a new floor, that is no problem - drill where it needs to be.

Caravel Water Heater

Thanks, all, for the replies. I have not done anything yet -- was doing prelim research for probable install in the Spring. I did confirm also, FYI, that Andy has the best price. Thanks again.

Suburban 6 gal 13 inch girth

I found the best fit for my 67 Caravel to be the 6 gal Suburban, i did the pilot lite 110v electric combination so never would need city electricity or battery to run on propane but still be able to plug into city 110v when available, it worked great on a recent 4300 mile trip of the west and only modest alum trim was necessary around front of heater and i retained original outside cover placement.
