I had a talented welder come out when I replaced half the floor, and he whipped up a solution to the rusted-away outrigger problem. He was very good. Fixed all the broken welds and reinforced around the step. When something is outside my skill set, I don't mind paying for a pro to come do the work!

Picture day

okay so we have pulled the shower unit and the black tank and now it is time to clean it up and prepare for the next part! remove the clean water tank and all of the water lines. The water heater has been disconnected and is just there until I can find something to cover the hole. AC will be removed for shell off and then a new AC will be placed forward for the install of a fantastic vent.

Andy do you have or know of a source for the curved ribs (inner to outer shell) I want to move the ac or a newer low profile ac forward and want to add more support. I am planning to add a fantastic vent where the orig vent was.
Thanks
Cliff

In order to get the frame and floor done and to keep stuff from getting damaged I am forced to rent a storage locker cuz I can not even get to my tool box! Not very organized I guess! Have a great day

Alright after the weekend it back to drilling rivets! All the interior parts are in the storage locker minus the ac and the skins which will be there by NLT Thursday. I still have to order a pigtail and the por but that shall be on order shortly. We have a party tomorrow for the youngest granddaughter (4) and then we are watching the eldest Madilyn (6) sat sunday and Monday night so no airstream til Monday afternoon when I get out of bed (230).

AC off tomorrow then the rest of the inner shell I am awaiting the assistance of the son in law for ac removal (safety). I am going to move the ac forward and replace it with a low profile unit then put a vent back in the spot it belongs in. May have to frame it in because it looks like it was cut for the ac.

Okay this is just a frustration post cuz I love to hold my anger in and let it fester! I love the airstream caravel but the poor quality control and poor improvisions are just starting to piss me off a little bit. Broke 2 drill bits found 3 hidden rivets and spent 2 hours doing something that should have taken 30 minutes. Just know that it will be better when we are done!
Okay airing over and yes I know that it is 47 years old and still good! That's why we like it so much.

Hold on there partner... You are very lucky, quality control was still very much in place. The 1966 was a very new departure for Airstream, they were trying to pull off some very innovative stuff. It was the space age and the styling of the 1966 was too. Ever looked at 1965? The differences are astounding, much like Corvette changing the body style, something totally different. Trust me, quality control was still in place. Take apart a 1980's model, and we'll talk.
Broken drill bits are an operator error. Broken bits are a sign you should have replaced it with a sharp one. Change them out a lot and they won't break. Buy em by the dozen is my motto...
Only three blind rivets? You should find about 21 more by the time you finish. They were not blind at one point of the construction. If you were deconstructing her all the way, in the reverse of how she was built, you would see them plain as day. You would probably even put them in the same place making them blind to the next guy.
30 minutes becoming 2 hours is a very realistic vision of what it will take you in the ends. You are eating an elephant. Take small bites and chew well. Eventually you will have eaten the whole thing... ENJOY THIS ADVENTURE!

Thank you very much 62 today I broke 1 dull and two brand new drill bits and yes I change them regularly but sadly it was operator error! No more blind rivets but 17 or so spinners and maybe the newbys in Ohio built ours cuz they left me a drill bit and a screw driver 3 small pieces of aluminum so I will still gripe besides would rather pick on quality control than people around me! No blaming myself I work for the gov!
