This is how I remove my solid rivets. Works great, if a bit more time consuming,

Removing Solid Rivets - Matronics

I use two drills to avoid switching the bits. This way I very rarely get any damage to the original hole. The ones around the door I did use a chisel on.

You are getting some good advice, however, I just drill them free hand. No punch, no multistep process. The bit I use is a sharp 1/8". I drill right into the center and move on. It generally takes less than 15 seconds. The new rivet is 5/32" so you have lots of room for slop. The new rivet hole is a #21 which is 10 bit sizes larger than the #31 hole you are removing the rivet from. You are not reinstalling 1/8" rivets so preserving the exact same hole is just overkill. Drill that hole and move on. There is no need to stress over this.

There are 3 different sizes of rivets, that you may need to remove.

1/8", 5/32", and 3/16 inch.

The correct number drill bits to use are # 30, # 21 and # 11.

# 30 drill bit is .1285 for .125 rivets (1/8")

# 21 drill bit is .159 for .15625 rivets (5/32")

# 11 drill bit is .191 for .1875 rivets. (3/16")

Andy

I will let you know how it goes I am going to get some new bits (2 bits remaining) still having fun but need to use the better bits! Got to say I have learned a lot about aluminum after thinking that I was experienced with it working on several military aluminum projects. As they say learn something new every day!

some major progress!

Today we removed 8 hidden rivets and only 2 of those with a chissel! then we cleared the dead ends eith a punch and yes we popped the shell! I still got my nappy (gotta work tonight)! gonna have to slow down on the pics will run out of room! the trailer now sits in the driveway and the shell is lowered and will be tied down tomorrow but the bulk of the work will now concentrate on the trailer! What a workout!

Congrats! Please make sure you tie down the shell as a stiff wind can cause it to take flight!

Hey Cliff! We are so excited! Major progress for you! My husband and I looked at the pics and we were proud of your progress. Tom said your floor looks like ours does. It looks real good!

Thank you I have the trailer covered (storms on Monday ) and will be strapping the shell down with the mobile home anchors. The wind doesnot get too bad in our court but not going to take any chances! We shooting for shell back on in three weeks. Once the shell is on then we will replace the curb side panel. Again thank you it feels good to get that done.
