New tires

It's probably in a thread somewhere, but I need to replace all 4 tires on my 1975 Airstream. The specs say:
7.00x15
6 ply tires
Or
7.00x15XC
Steel Radial tires

I've been looking all over and have only really found 8 ply.

Help anyone?

7:00 x 15 bias ply tires are still a popular trailer tire size...check with any of the national tire chains (no pun intended...) nearby, you should find them...

My preference is a st225-75r15 D rated,I`ve tried cratings and just couldn`t keep the tread on the tires. Dave

The original 700 x 15 tire diameter is about 29.8 "

The 205/75R15's dia is about 27.1 " - which will lower your trailer about 1-1/3 " due to the dia difference, but in reality, probably more due to the radial's more flexible sidewall...

225/75R15's have a dia of about 28.2 " - closer, but will still lower the trailer, giving you a bit less ground clearance...

To retain the original height of the 700 x 15's, (converting to radials) I believe you'd have to change to 16 inch wheels, as many of the current trailers use... 235/80R16's perhaps - dia of 30.8 "...

I recall looking for new tires a few years ago. You want 6 or 8 ply C or D load range tires. Cross ply tires are supposed to be a bit stiffer and I have been told (don't know if it is true- but..) cross ply tires are better for most trailers, definitely use an ST type, though I have been told on the lighter trailers (like tradewinds) that LT can also be used.

ST= special Trailer ---very stiff side walls
LT = Light Truck---stiff side walls

If you use a D load tire - only inflate it to C range (50-60) pressure. The tire can take more but your rims are not made for higher loads...this is all second hand though, I am not a tire guy. Search the tire threads, I also got a lot of information from the forum.

You can go with a 235/75-R15 XL rated tire truck tire. These are bigger and wider than stock. They are rated a 2185lb if it is 108T load rated.
