Any one in Oregon?

I just purchased my 74 Tradewind! Is there anyone who would be willing to talk with me about their experience with restoration? I am starting with the fridge....and am full of questions (and enthusiasm!) Thanks for any input, Pam

Welcome to the crazy world of Airstream Restoration.
Before you start on any project, move your mouse up to the search button and search on your subject at hand.
You will find that anything you want to do, has been done before and you'll save lots of cash by seeing how others did it right, or wrong.
This is the place to ask what ever question you have on any subject.
Good luck and "Keep Coming Back".

Pam -

I'm nearby, in Hillsboro. I owned a '72 Overlander for 2 years prior to my current trailer. It needed only minor work/changes, however. I'd be happy to talk or help out in any way I can. Phone is 628-0315, email trackus@teleport.com.

Hope you enjoy your trailer as much as I do mine!

Mark

Pam,

Welcome to the forums and to the world of AS ownership and restoration...

I am just up the road a bit from you on the Beaverton edge of Portland. I am working on a 1973 31' Sovereign International that was largely gutted when I got it. I am in the process now of replacing the floor. All of the interior skins are off and the insulation is stripped out. Wires are hanging down everywhere. It looks like something out of a Star Wars movie at the moment. I can't help much yet on some of the things you mentioned but I would be happy to help with whatever I can. If you would like to look at what the guts of a stripped down AS looks like mine is the one to look at.

The following link takes you to a photo in my gallery that gives you an idea of what it looks like. The photo shows an earlier stage of the floor restoration with just part of the old floor removed. I have most of the new floor in place now.

Hey, thanks for all of the responses! It looks as if I am in good company here in the Northwest. I am currently busily reading all of the old forums in an effort to not post a lot of questions that have already been answered. There is an overwhelming amount of information. I have been looking for an Airstream for years, and considering what I wanted. I even considered a new one for a while, but thought a restored trailer would be more fun....Since I made my purchase I have had little time to even go over the trailer and assess exactly what I have gotten myself into. I think a good starting point (besides this forum) would be to find a users manual. Any ideas?

Thanks again for your responses. Pam

From the VAC website...

Q: I need an owners and service manual for my Airstream. Where can I get one?
A: The first owners manuals were published in 1964. Prior to that, the owner received a brown envelope containing parts lists and other helpful information on the accessories in his trailer. The VAC has started making these available in the Members Archive section. A service manual with instructions for performing service operations did not exist until 1972.
You can get photocopies of owners manual (1964+) and service manuals (1972-1986) from:

Helen Davis Secretarial Services
PO Box 484 Sidney, OH 45365
(937)492-8885

Prices are about $33 and $70 respectively. After 1986 the Owners Manuals included available service information.

Smile Another '74 Tradewind in Portland

Hi Pam,
Just wanted to say a quick hello, I am in portland (cedar mill area) and also got my first airstream, a 74 tradewind this summer.
I am just getting started also, so am learning a lot from the very helpful and knowledgeable folks on this forum (has been great!) So far, I've done some exterior work stripped off the old clearcoat, done some hitch work, replaced propane tanks, and removed the interior flooring, beds etc getting ready for the more major projects.
My current projects are replacing the furnace & water heater\pump, and doing some interior painting & prep for new flooring. I also have a list of other projects I'd like to tackle after the current ones are done...fridge might be next.... so many idea's
Am glad to hear there is another '74 tradewind in the area, and am looking forward to hearing about your progress, and while I'm learning also, am happy to help if I can.
All the best,
Nola

That's one of the great things about this forum. A newbie asks for some input and advise and tons of folks chime in with assistance and offers. Welcome aboard Pam. If you don't feel right at home just yet, give it a few minutes.

Now you're one of the afflicted and ain't it great?

Brad
