I have a 1959 ambassador 28 ft. and was wondering if there are any other 59 ambassadors out there or do I have a rare trailer. Can anyone tell me any information from the serial number. The number is 289032.
Does anyone know how many 1959 Ambassadors were made. Just looking for any info I can find on my Ambassador
Hi Andrew,
Welcome to the forums and vintage Airstream ownership. If the serial number pattern for Ambassadors follows the Trade Wind models, then your trailer was made in Ohio. I'll decode it for you.
28 is the length in feet
9 indicates built in Ohio
032 is the sequential number of Ambassadors made in this model year making yours the 32nd one made in Ohio for that year
Hope this helps. If you have the capabilities, why don't you send pictures of your trailer to RJ over at the airstream.net site for the archives. There isn't a '59 Ambassador shown and we all would like to see it added for everyone to see.
Hi Andrew: 1959 was the first model year for the new 28' Ambassador, which was built only in Ohio during 1959. California production began in the 1960 model year (not calendar year). The Ohio plant made 81 Ambassadors the first year, so yours is the 32nd of 81 manufactured in 1959. The "9" in your serial number indicates the 1959 model year trailer. But because this serial number format was used only by the Ohio plant during 1959, it also identifies yours as an Ohio trailer. California used a different serial number format for it's 1959 trailers.

We just bought a 1959 Ambassador. It has been sitting in a field for sometime. It will keep my husband busy for a long time restoring it! Interior will take a lot of work, but I guess that is part of the fun. We're located in Michigan. Where are you located?

Mary Ellen, welcome! We have 'Airstreamed' with Andy many times this year & I know he'll be excited to know there is another '59 28' Ambassador out there. They are at a rally this week-end but I'm sure he'll post or pm you when he gets back, I'll tell him about your query.
Just thought I would bump this thread to see if there are other 59 ambassador owners on the forums since the original post back in Feb. 2004
Please reply.
I know Colin has a 59 Ambassador, with factory bunks and factory Air - mounted on the side, as we go camping with him, his family and the Ambassador all the time. It is very original, and in nice shape!

Hi Andrew,
Rob is right, we do have a 59 Ambassador International, serial #I289079. It is very original including the original bark cloth curtains (in great shape) that came with the trailer 47 years ago. The original purchaser owned it for 40 years until his death in 99. His grand daughter wasn't interested in it & sold it to a young couple near Allentown Pa. who put it in a campground for two years. We purchased it 5 years ago and have been using it ever since. I've been meaning to send RJ some photos for some time for the archives but haven't had the chance.

Thanks for the info Colin. Do you have any pictures of your unit.
It looks like you have #79 of the 81 made in 59 according to Fred's information. What color is yours on the inside. I have some pictures of mine in my gallery need to add some more . Several of RJ pictures are of my trailer.
Welcome, I don't have an Ambassador, but I do have a 1959 Flying Cloud. It was a good year for Airstreams. May you fully enjoy your new Toy.

I have a 1959 Ambassador. My dad bought about 15 years ago and when he died (March of 2005) I inherited it. It needs quite a bit of TLC, but is mechanicaly in good condition. I pulled it to my house and it has been sitting there since then. I keep it plugged up to AC to keep it warm in the winter (I have some musical equipment stored in it) and to keep the refrig working. My dad had it hooked up to water and everything (coming from his house) and used it as a place to get away from home. I had planned on keeping it and restoring it but have lately considered selling it. I'm not sure of the value so if I sell it I'll probably put it on eBay. I'm going to post a couple of pics too.
