What to do?

Our 65 Tradewind was broken into for the 2nd time last week. We currently park it at our lake lot here in Kansas. Here's the thing - My husband and I have had enough and would rather sell it than have it torn up. Today we got a call from the Sheriff to come identify our property. The bad men broke out the window next to the door and put their "gloved" hand in to unlock the door. At least this time they didn't trash the place. I must admit that owning an Airstream has been my dream since highschool. Our unit is clean, but with 42yr old problems. The latest is a leak under the bathroom sink. The lake has stepped up security. We've installed a security light that lights up the yard almost as bright as a ballfield. We keep all tools and instruments of destruction locked away. But now it feels violated. I suggested we redecorate and have a party to drive away the "evil vibes". It's homey and comfortable and we've made good memories with our grandkids. What would you do?

fix it up and tow it home to keep the dirtballs at bay.

they are ment to travel. i have places away from home i could keep mine at. but, having it safe and sound in the back yard allows me to use it as guest space if needed.

btw, welcome to the forum, too bad your first post was such a bummer.

this might not be practical but....

A lot of college kids will jump at the chance for cheap rent, even if it means they need to vacate the premises for the weekend.
A constant pressence like that is a good deterent for break-ins.

The other alternative is to find the dirty SOB who did this and steak his head on LP tank hold down rod as a warning to others.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience.
Several possible solutions come to mind -
For not a lot of money, you could get a tiny video camera (for a computer),hide it in your trailer and video the goings on.
You can also get wild game cameras - mounted on a tree outside, no flash, takes photos when motion is detected.
The other ideas I have involve lead and gunpowder, so they are probably not practical.
Best of luck to you.

We suffered the same fate with a SOB we have at our weekend place. I am installing a cellular based security system that will also let me call in and turn on the AC/Heater and control other items.
Until that is complete we installed Fake security cameras as well as "Video Survellance" signs. Most folks agree that the limited up side for a thief by breaking in again will be offset by the possiblity of those cameras being real. They should just move on to the next easy target.
I did see a $39 digital game camera at bass pro last week but from my experience, if seen the thief will just snatch the camera (and it was an expensive one )

Another other option is don't leave anything worth stealing and DON'T lock the door...

Welcome to the forums. I am sorry to hear about the break ins. Having my truck broken into three times in the last 12 months, I had a burglar alarm installed in it. While it was being installed, I noticed a brochure for a trailer alarm. The name of the company was Trailer Dog Alarms. Pro-tec System One is another brand that offers trailer alarms. I don't know if these systems offer any kind of remote notification or monitoring, but I like the web cam idea.

You might also look into one of the monitored systems for homes. They might offer a monitoring service that can be applied to your trailer when it is stationary for a period of time. With this option, you might could get a family plan with your cell phone and leave one of the phones with shared minutes at the trailer in a concealed location so that if the system is breached, the phone will be used, but if it's not, then you aren't paying for a dedicated cell service at that location...that is if you can work it out to work that way.

Good luck.

A quick update. We spent the weekend at our land after 4 weeks away. Our fake cameras and signs may have done some good, not even a single footprint in the area. With no rain in the past month , footprints would have been visible. The el cheapo Home Depot motion detector in the camper went full alarm when I unlocked and opened the door so it's survived the extreme heat.

Exterminator Notice

Here are a few suggestions:
  1. leave a bag of used Pampers just outside the door, or Depends for max effect - moist and "fragrant"
  2. have a fly covered pigs head mounted on a stake near the door, it will be effective even after the crows have picked it clean (remember "Lord of the Flies?"
  3. leave a dried discarded snake skin hanging from the door handle with a note to the exterminator, "Could this be a rattlesnake & do they stay with their mate?"
  4. cameras - like prior posters said
  5. guard geese - if you can fence in property and feed geese, they are very territorial and will bite interlopers on the butt
  6. a pair of size 13 workshoes and a couple of empty black powder pony kegs 2.2lbs. Any ammo shop with reloaders supplies will have them.
  7. An extra set of windows with bullet holes coming from the inside out.
  8. at least 20 broken "Wild Turkey" bottles and beer cans with LARGE caliber bullet holes in them. Empty brasses on the ground outside the door are effective too.
  9. Have some very ratty t-shirts with "Seal Team" logos on them hanging from a clothsline, and two or three rusty bear traps also hanging on the line.
Seriously - cameras and alarm systems. VERY bright lights with motion sensors.

----Wishing you better luck, Paula
