Weird hinges in tub on 1967 Tradewind

Has anyone seen these before? I can't imagine what they would be needed for, can you?

They look like a plastic part. Maybe some previous owner had some idea for something. They were not on my 66 Trade Wind. But the 67s had the new, improved bath fixtures. We'll see if someone can identify them.

pythonesk, Those do not belong on your tub. A Previous Owner (PO) must have added them for some unknown modification that they wanted like a seat or lid for the tub. Remove the rivets & hinges and fill the holes. Ed

I had these hinges too. The cover for the toilet and its seat get attached to them. My suspicion is that the original toilet seat had no cover, and this was an "attractive" cover.

Wayne has it right, most all 67's had that seat for the toilet hinged on the side of the tub.

Those hinges do indeed belong there. Here is a photo of the cover that doubles as a seat.

Wow. I learned something new today. My 66 had a toilet seat cover hinged on the back. It is the teal blue cushion seen at the back of the photo. My 75 has a toilet seat cover hinged at the back.

I can't say hinging a toilet seat cover from the side of a thermo formed plastic bath tub was the greatest idea Airstream ever had.

Mystery solved.

I'm still trying to figure out why the seat was put there in the first place. Was it to cover the toilet seat, since that is something to hide? Would an exiled husband go there to think after closing the pocket door?

Hi Wayne: I think the "airliner bathroom" in these vintage Airstreams were designed for women. We all know women are the decision makers. I bet a lot of Airstreams were sold on these bathrooms. I think Airstream was trying to convince a woman that traveling in a small trailer would indeed be comfortable. The cushioned seat allows comfortable toe nail polishing and nylon stocking assembly back in the sixties.

We men just looked at it as a unnecessary "stool softener".

Hi David,

I kept trying to think of a reason one would sit there--it wouldn't be a comfortable position to wash a small child in the tub. I hadn't thought of the space as a dressing space or anything else. I'd leave my toenail trimmings in the living room area, intentionally.

Thanks for the photos! I guess we will replace the seat part. The back is still there and exactly the same fabric as rasmuw showed in his photo. The fabric is coming off a bit though so I think I'll replace it with something similar and recreate the seat. We did wonder why the back portion was allowing such a big view into the "hamper" behind it but now I see that a padded seat would have covered that gap.

Speaking as a female I would appreciate this feature because when you go into a bathroom for a shower it is often hard to find a place to put your clean clothes. If you put them on top of the toilet, which can be slick and/or rounded, they can fall off onto the floor which grosses me out a bit.
