Ingrid, POR-15 tends to get EVERYWHERE when you are using it. I think if it doesn't, you aren't doing it right!
Keep the updates coming, we are rooting for you.

Thank you! I wore full body protection and somehow it got through my clothes onto my skin in various other places too, I was starting to think I'm just a POR 15 magnet.

I appreciate the encouragement!

Keep plugging away...

Ingrid-

As Nor-Cal fans, we appreciate how weather is such a poor excuse... ("Oh No.. It's down to almost 50 degrees and might be foggy..")

Glad to hear you're cutting and painting and we can see the tired insulation and nasty plywood that make up the next set of stories... Wish we could encourage your hubby to quit those high paying real jobs and crawl under the trailer with you, so we could be sure you'd be ready for the Russion River outing in April...

Keep up the good work, and we're looking forward to progress reports..

John McG

removed belly pan myself this time

I got under today, and cut out a huge piece of belly pan. I will post pictures tomorrow, my camera battery died and it's now dark out. But I am very proud of myself because I just went out there and drilled and cut and pulled out a big piece all by myself. I had relied on my husband to do it but I figured since it has to be thrown away anyway, I can snip parts that I am not strong enough to remove myself, and then cut bolts that are still there. This means I can order more paint and get moving on painting the rest of the frame underneath. Tomorrow I think I'm going to tackle getting of the whole rest of the pan, there's not much left.

Tip: if you left your tools underneath and don't feel like crawling under to retrieve them, a rake works great!

Good job, ingrid! What did you use for cutting with? I am well into the floor repair now, and so far it's not too bad, just tiring. Once I get the wood out and the frame welded where it's broken, I'll be wearing POR-15 too! Just keep thinking of spring, and it'll all be OK!

i think...

I think they're just tin snips? My husband used to be a pipe coverer and when he worked with sheet metal he used them to cut. I just hacked away because we're putting a whole new pan on.The POR 15 part is fun, I think you'll enjoy it. It's a magical change from rusty old metal to shiny black and new looking.
I won't be traveling in the spring...probably helping husband with the shell-on floor replacement, which we're doing completely from scratch too. Are you doing the whole floor, or just repairs?

Just repairs. I don't want to do any more than I absolutely have to. The sooner it's back on the road the better! But by repairs I mean the entire front half of the floor. I think that's enough to get all the bad spots. The back half looked ok.

scrub-a-dub

I did some scrubbing of the interior panels. It's been raining so I couldn't do much on the outisde, so I moved in!

LA's Awesome Concentrated Cleaner, really is awesome. You can see the difference where I only scrubbed a little after spraying some on. I labeled it. Very satisfying for a German to be seeing this kind of results!

Thanks to creampuff, I may be able to in someday without holdling my nose.

Today I said SCREW IT. I couldn't rinse out one more greasy ragful. Too gross. I took everything out of the trailer, coated the interior with sprayfuls of Awesome, waited a while, and hosed out the thing. Lucky for me, there are so many holes in the floor that the water (mostly) just dripped right out onto the ground. I'm sure I soaked insulation, electrical stuff, and other things that shouldn't be soaked, but it's ALL coming out and being replaced. I finally got a close-up, in-the-sun look at all the interior panels, and a lot of them need to be replaced. Or fixed? What does one do? There is also a layer of paint from some PO that came off in flakes from the hose.

It was quite gratifying.

MIght as well strip those panels down or replace them and go CCD-style.

Good job on the cleanup - you're certainly persistent!

How hard is it to replace panels? Do you know? Anybody? I would think you can just cut aluminum and rivet it in...that sounds much easier than our zolatone/paint/veneer/whatever options.

Now that would be COOL! Now you've got my mind going. Hubby can do this I think.

Replacing panels

You can use the old panels for templates, cut the new material, and rivet everything in place with blind rivets. Then, touch up the rivet heads with matching nail polish. ( matching the walls that is, not your outfit)
I will likely replace a few interior panels myself, on my 63 Overlander project.
You're making good progress!

It really is not that hard. All it takes is a little planning and a few tools.

Check this out:

We have redone the front of this coach in just that manner.....

Wow, you guys are doing such cool stuff to that Argosy! Go for it Ingrid! Once you get those panels off you'll see they are just long flat panels. Lay them out, cut new ones from shiny new aluminum, put them back up, and paint the rivetheads pink You're doing all this work, you might as well go all the way, plus it saves you from all that cleaning!

I am starting to think so. We can do something else on the interior end panels, or paint?

First things first: I'm going to start removing floor soon. I'm scared!!

All of you are my heros. I just started on my 1978 Argosy and I feel almost guilty that it doesn't look as if I need to gut the thing. I'm all ready to go for it too, but I can't find any leaks or real damage. This coach came from El Paso and New Mexico originally, so maybe it hasn't been rained on that much. I can't wait to get the Awesome Cleaner. Can't seem to find it in Oklahoma, so will have to wait till I go to Texas to see my daughter. Right now I'm stripping the vinyl off the back walls and repainting those orange outside letters. The carpet comes out next. This is where I may eat my words about those leaks. Can anyone tell me how to put pctures on this post? I have the pictures in my computer. JUDY

hi juel,

check your zip code at www.99only.com they'll have the nearest location that sells it. I tried it and found a location a few miles away. If you need a few bottles i'll buy some and send it to you.

real progress!

We made a big step. Pulled the front 1/3 of the floor out, and the frame looks like it's in really good shape. All the rust or pitted parts that are there we already could see. Jeff had to do the big prying and whacking but other than that, I did it myself!!

I'll have to take more pictures and post them later. I reduced them too small and saved the file before I realized my mistake, so they're too small to really see anything.
