It's good to remind one's self of the progress being made every now and then. Your Trade Wind is gaining value every week seems to me. Having the ceiling up is big progress. The rest of the skins will be easier.

Looks great Dale. Your Airstream will be better than new when you get finished because it will be custom built to your and Terry s specifications. You also will never be able to put a price tag on what it means to have done it your way.

shore enough

Boy, cutting a 2 3/4" hole in the side of the Tradewind involved some trepidation, but it turned out well. The stainless steel Furrion outlet is a gearhead's dream.

Nice job on the outlet installation. It is an outlet. Just like a regular 120 volt receptacle is an outlet.

Hi Slats: I've installed three of these Furion 30 amp inlets/outlets. They are a well made piece. It is a 30 amp "twist to lock" connector, so a guy need the right female plug on the end of the power cord. That was not mentioned in the ordering literature I used. I also found the set screws that tighten the stranded wire to the Furion unit seemed weak to me. Stranded wire always compresses some when tightening, and then compresses some more after you wiggle it a bit. I had no problems with them, it just seemed like the set screws would strip before I was satisfied my wires were "goot n tite".

I installed the Furrion outlet in my Caravel.
The absolute worst part was putting the big hole in the trailer. It was seriously nerve wracking.

Thanks. My friend of a friend electrician came by today and ran all the wiring for the tail lights, running lights and brakes, topping it all off with a spiffy new 7 pin connector. It was something I could have done, perhaps, but to watch (and sort of help) someone who has done such stuff all his life was a pleasure. He could do perfect shrink-wrapped solder joints in very short order. Plus, he is just a really good guy and I enjoyed his company.

By the way, I'm thinking of putting a battery box the front of the trailer (on the outside). Anyone done this? Pros and cons? Theft worries?

I think Airstream started putting batteries in the front on the "A frame" rails in about 1976. Unfortuntally my 1975 Overlander as well as the mid sixties Trade Winds had the battery in the back. Not great.

I vote for a forward mount of the battery. I believe you can buy a lockable battery box for the battery pack you have planned. You can build a platform on the A frame behind the propane tanks. I see on Air Forums others have done this.

I moved the battery of my 75 Overlander forward and mounted it under the gaucho. It is a "vent less" AGM 12v group 27. We don't boondock much, and horrors of horrors, I have a generator. The downside of my decision is I elected to leave the converter and fuse panel in their original locations curb side under the bathtub as that is where all the 12v circuits (4) originate. No one would recommend this due to the voltage drop with long battery cables. I used big honk'in cables and ran them under the belly pan and into the spare tire cavity. I measured a 0.2 volt drop from the battery to the fuse panel. We shall see if I can get buy with this arrangement.

Batteries in front

Yes, I have the batteries moved out to the tongue.

Had a steel mesh "basket" installed between the propane tank and the front of the trailer.
Then we used a heavy duty plastic battery box with lid from Ebay to keep 2 6v batteries end to end. I spray painted it metal grey and it was just ok to look at.

The boxes don't come with a locking mechanism and we were using a screw to keep the lid on. That was a mistake. During my last trip the lid flew off and was lost in the mountains of NC. Oops.

Now in the process of reinstalling another box. Same one but I will pay more attention to how it locks, the paint job, and will add a couple of drain holes in the bottom.

I wasn't worried about theft because I don't usually leave the trailer anywhere unattended. And the box is exactly to size. It's not that easy to just take a battery out.

I'm not sure I'll do this again on the newest project only because I don't always remember to take the spare tire in the back of my truck. I'm researching adding the spare to the front of the trailer instead. And getting AGM's for inside.

getting ideas

AGMS just aft of the wheel wells was my original plan and I think I will stick with it. But, just for the heck of it, before get the belly pan back on I will still run some fat battery cable lines up to the tongue just to keep my options open.


I dragged some of the bathroom stuff inside the other day to get an idea of what I want to modify (pick below). The big cabinet that takes up the whole street side corner is on the chopping block. I think I'd rather put a sink and counter there. I like the feeling of openness I get from having the full end cap to roam around in. There should be plenty of storage space below the sink, as the only systems stuff that will run through there will be the drain line from the kitchen and bathroom sinks and the pex plumbing to the bathroom sink and shower/tub. I'm of a mind in general that storage space only invites stuff to store and I'm getting to be more minimalist as I age. But I'm all ears to hear what experienced folks have to say about this plan.

i like your idea to remove that big cabinet. certainly would open things up more. You could still make space under counter and sink if you need it.

Opening up the trailer is a great idea. We did it a little differently than what you are thinking. We wanted to leave the back wall to facilitate bathroom privacy. Also that cabinetry provided great storage. What we wound up doing is removing the street side bulkhead. What ever you decide, opening the trailer up is a great idea.
