If that's the case, then I would agree. How about some pictures of the plaque and serial number tag? I imagine the 5/59 you posted is the date stamp in the bottom corner of the ID tag too?

Thanks for the info, I'm adding you to the registry.

That is definitely a TradeWind. What is that over the front rectangular vent opening? Looks like some type of commercial exhaust vent.

What are you plans for this?

It does appear to be a commercial vent hood or a chimney cap. We are going to start with pulling out the interior and floors and making repairs on the pan. Then replacing outside panels and repairing dents and the front window. Also replace springs and bearing in the axle as well as replacing the tongue on the trailer. After that I hope we come to a decision on the inside. I make cabinets and I may go full custom, but not sure yet. I really would like to put the two twin beds in the back and have bunks.

A 59 in Phoenix

John Abbott has a beautiful 59TWIND in Arizona. He is and his wife own the business "Airstreams4Rent". We rented their 59 for a road trip vacation and it quickly solidified our plans to buy our own. Coincidently John looked at ours for a customer before we bought ours. He has been a wealth of help and support as we start the journey (repair), no actual trips yet unless you call across town for various services. They have a website with a few photo's and are now doing restoration also. We even borrowed his license plate style because people are always asking what year.

There is another '59 in Phoenix too. Mine. I've been in John's TradeWind and it is nicely redone with a few modern amenities.

Hi, we are brand new Airstream owners in Missouri. Two weeks ago we bought a 1959 Tradewind that is almost entirely original. It is the lounge model with the two twin beds. We are so excited that interior is all there down to the Fabulous 50's light fixtures and Princess stove. It still has the original upholstery on the big sofa! It has been garaged most of its life so interior and exterior are in great shape. We do need some advice though on hooking up the toilet. It did not come with a hose and seems to need some sort of valve. It is just an open hole right now. When you flush you can see the pavement through the hole. (Luckily no one has been using it!) Anyone know what we need and where we can get it? So excited to know there are still a lot of 1959's out there! Kathy

Yay!! Another early TradeWind surfaces and gets new owners!! So glad to hear of this exciting news. We all love pictures, anyway you could post some?

I would also like to add your TradeWind to the Early TradeWind Registry. Can you post the serial number please?

A couple of points on your commode issue. Black water tanks were not added to the TradeWind models for a few years after 1959. Mine was the same way, push down the valve and see daylight. You were suppose to dig a "gopher hole" in the ground and then cover it when you leave. Mine was this way and I added a black water tank above the floor and put in a low-profile ceramic Sealand toilet a number of years ago. Works great.

Congrats on your new acquisition. You are absolutely going to LOVE it.

New 1959 Tradewind owner

Hi Brad,
I just uploaded some pics of my Airstream. The serial # plate was in one. I can send more of interior if anyone is interested.
Thank you so much for the toilet info! We thought we were crazy not seeing a tank below! Would one of those all in one Traveler tank and toilet systems work? Were you able to easily hook up a sewer hose kit to your new set up to clean things out through the existing hole? You can tell we don't know what were are doing and are looking for the simplest solution!
Also are there any manuals out there for the 1959 Tradewind? That information would be invaluable. We have not been able to find anything older than 1964.
Thanks for your help and for running this registry.
Kathy

Only one showed up and from what I can see, she's a beauty. Even has the folding table.

It wasn't necessarily easy to install the above floor black tank but it wasn't that difficult either. Nothing's really difficult, its just that some things take longer than others.

My 1959 Tradewind

Sorry, I just tried to attach a few more pics of our Airstream, but not having any luck. Any secret to uploading them to this site?
For the registry our serial # is 249010, and it says Jackson Center Ohio on the plate.
Still trying to resolve the toilet issue. We are thinking about one of those all in one tank and toilet. I think it is called a Sealand Traveler. Brad, when you put your new tank on, how did you attach it to the hole that is there for the "gopher hole". We don't see that there is any valve to shut it and don't know how to hook up a modern sewer hose to dump the new tank through that hole.
Thanks,
Kathy

I put in a black tank from a 1960 Airstream Traveler that a friend plans on renovating. It went right in and I built a box for it out of 3/4" plywood and mounted the Sealand toilet to the top of the box. The bottom had a screw in connection about 3.5 inches in diameter that a Valterra dump valve screwed into. I wish I had current pictures on my laptop here at work. I'll post a few pictures tonight. Hope that helps some.

Thanks for the serial number. I'll add it tonight.

Thanks, Brad. Looking at a Sealand Traveler toilet that is mounted right on top of a tank. That seems easy to install as long as we can get rid of the sewage through our gopher hole pipe. On our 1959's, was there a valve in that pipe that opened and closed underneath the trailer? Sorry to keep bugging you, but you are a wealth of information! Kathy

Actually, the "gopher hole" is what you dig in the ground just under your dump valve. You cover it up when you leave and pull the trailer away from the hole. The bottom of the tank had a threaded hole for mounting a dump release valve. Sorry but I don't have any pictures of it.

1959 sewer connection

Thanks for the info, Brad. We will explore that valve. Is there such a thing as a 1959 Tradewind owner's manual?

I love your outside light on the TV antenna mount in the above picture.

There wasn't an owner's/operator's manual until 1964. The factory did put out typed info sheets on some of the systems and copies of factory-supplied sheets on the brakes, oven controller, water purifier, etc. but these weren't always supplied. I have a few different digital files of these. I also have Airstream promotional sheets on the different models including both factory's TradeWind sheets. I have also drawn up sheets for the water, propane and 12 volt systems that I did on my trailer when I renovated it. PM me your email and I'll send you what I have if you're interested.
