Shelly,
If you had a long enough tongue (I realize that's a rather personal statement) it'll probably be perfectly possible to use the "valley and cone" style on the front instead of the flat. You'll just need to make sure you have room to pull it forward far enough to clear the tire.

As for the construction of the flat front version, it'll be easy to create with the same tooling, so I'll probably do a batch anyhow. They have a hinged section that allows it to lift straight up - pretty nifty, and while these photos (of someone else's cover) look awful, I imagine it'd look perfectly nice when new and clean (and dynamite polished).

Brad, I would be willing to put in an order for three and even put the money up in advance...

Count me in. I'll make it work somehow!!! I'll put the money up front too. Anyone near me want to combine shipping? Heck, maybe I'll use it as an excuse to go see Frank's place .

IndyAnne: any 68 Trade Winds with this cover?

The front mount seems good to me. I hope I can make room for it.

Wait -- did any other 68 J.C. models have this front tire cover? I need to check out the frame/mount for it while I am already tinkering around with rearranging stuff.

The main question is upfront costs, as I'll need to put up a couple thousand dollars to make the first batch... the costly part being the full-sized maple and steel "dies" that the aluminum is formed over. Still, I'd really like to get the first batch created this summer (batches probably being 2 dozen or so), and have even been in touch with VTS about the possibility of facilitating easier (less costly) shipping, which would open this up to more folks as well. Nobody's going to get rich off re-making these, but as with most things Airstream: it's a passion.

With several people having asked about tongue-mounted front covers rather than having them on the back bumper, I believe that can be accomplished as well -- most importantly, using the SAME tooling as the rear covers. It will involve skipping the last couple of steps in the forming process where the inner valley and cone are formed. This way it will be a flat front, with the the bottom 1/5th or so cut off so it sits flush with the tongue, and a small hinged door added on the side to let it slide straight up over the spare. That's how all the originals that I've seen photos of were constructed, and is great because you won't have to remove your LP tanks to pull the cover off the spare.

I'll put in a call again with the company here in Chicago, and in the meantime, if anybody would like to put in some of the seed money for this project - with the knowledge it'll be applied towards their cover - I'm open to considering that. I'm happy to provide additional details, more accurate overall costs and intended timelines for added peace of mind, as I'm happy to keep this project transparent and educational.

Quick update: it's been a week, but I'm expecting an quote today on these. At that point I'll crunch a few numbers and attempt to move forward on this.

Hey, fellow continental kit enthusiasts.

In the interest of keeping this project both financially transparent and easy to keep track of... I've created a Kickstarter page here.

The way it works, essentially, is that you "pledge" the purchase price for one cover, but are only charged if we reached the minimum order size by July 16th (30 days from now). If we don't, you're out nothing. If we get enough people, I imagine I could have the covers produced within an additional month. So I'd say we're looking at mid-August if everything goes well.

I'm not terribly confident that we'll have the numbers for this to work, but I'm happy to try - and encourage you to spread the word to help get these back in production. Thanks for all your patience, too!

Don't forget to click on the photo -- there's a video slideshow with dimensions, etc.

Hey Dave and (Mellooooo) Mike,

Thanks for comin' on board!
The only hiccup with not using the site is that Kickstarter needs to see us hit that 25 cover goal or nobody will get charged, making things a lot more complicated.

The best Plan B I can think of is to suggest you send me the $275 via another method... and I'll then pledge on your behalf for your covers via Kickstarter with my account. IF we don't hit the goal, then I'd send your money back to you. It's that "holding lots of peoples' money" thing I was trying to avoid, but if it's just a few people out of the group it won't get too messy.

I'll PM you both with PayPal and snail mail addresses.

Front mount system

Great idea.

I'm interested in a front mount spare tire cover..and mount.

How would spare tire with cover mount to the Airstream?

ie: what holds it in place, keeps tire from rubbing on trailer front panel, weight distribution torsion arm mounts or propane tank cover and keeps it from "walking" away, and how do you remove spare tire when needed without removing tank cover?

Would like to install on '64 Safari front A frame.
Thanks

Hi all,

The mods have kindly requested that we move this conversation into the commercial section of the site. I've created a new thread and answered your question there, Safari64.

Continuation of this thread.
Thanks!
