Access door for a 61 Tradewind

I am trying to find a replacement hinge for the storage compartment access door on my 61 Tradewind. The door itself is in good shape but the hinge is pulling thru the rivets that hold it to the door. It is bent also and I think a lost cause.

I have looked in the regular places for a replacement but got nothing. Anyone out there ever had to change one of these things out.

Thank you for the help.

Check out McMaster Carr for aluminum piano hinges.

Tradewind access door hinge

byamcaravanner

Thank you for the hinge alternative. That one may just work.

The old Tradewind hinge is a piano type hinge that has one leg that is 1 inch wide and the other is abut 3/4 of an inch. The part that is tough is that they do not open in the same plain. The long leg attaches to the Airstream skin 3/8 inch recessed from the plain where the hinge is and other leg attaches to the door.

I'm not sure I follow you and I don't have one here to look at. McMaster has a page called "about piano hinges" that may give you the info you are looking for. If you can post some pictures or a sketch I might be able to understand better.

Access door hinge

byamcaravanner

I looked at the McMaster-Carr pages and the hinge that looks similar is on page 2963 and is a load rated aluminum geared hinge. It looks like it would work but I would have to do some bending of the hinge legs.

See pictures of what I have.

I was thinking of the side hinged access doors... the geared hinge is the one you want. It looks like the one on your trailer is factory customized from the stock hinge. I would first consider doing my best to bend the existing one back into shape.

Good luck!

Acces Door hinge

byamcaravanner

I was trying to clean and straighten the old one last night, cheaper than buying a new one.

It looks better but but doesn't open or close very well. Since I have the rivets all out it is a great time to upgrade.

Thank you for the help.

David,

If you think you can modify the one you saw at McMaster...go for it. You are right, no time like now to upgrade.

Good Luck! and post about your efforts.
