'67 Tradewind, anybody?
We're going to buy a '67 Tradwind A/S pretty soon it looks like, I'm having trouble finding any pictures or information on them besides the model list at the VAC website. Does anybody else out there have one and will share pictures with me? I'm looking for ideas, and we'll be posting soon about the trip, tow home, and our new baby...

Ingrid-
Congratulations!
Isn't it exciting? The hopes, the fears, the dreams the ANTCIPATION!
If you go to www.VintageAirstream.com , scroll down to the bottom of the home page, click on the archive section look at the '65-68 Tradewinds, they are all pretty much the same inside. (personally< I like the one that they show for the 65, nicely done inside).
I hope you are aware that the 66,67 & 68 Airstreams have the Corning glass windows. Hopefully, yours will all be there, because replacing them can be very $$$$$$$$$$$$. Or there is the Lexan substitute, which Inland RV has.
Good luck with your new baby, and all the adventures that it will bring.

Congrats Ingrid you will have lots of fun....
When we bought ours we wanted to get as much info as possible - a nice member on this forum re VAC sent me to this link below to get a pdf of the 1968 Airstream Catalogue. Although we were a change year in windows and body size everything else was pretty much the same and it was a great document to look at over and over and over and over until we got to bring our new puppy home.
I am no expert but from what I have seen there was not too many differences between the 67 & 68
Good luck with your pick up - can't wait to see pics

Ingrid,
I don't have a 1967, but I can tell you that the Tredewind is a great size for 2 adults and 2 kids. My 1971 has huge storage closets, and tows quite well behind a Suburban.
Best wishes!

Why, thank ya!
Yep the owner says they're all there (corning windows) except for one which is plastic, none broken.
We're part time caretakers for a niece and nephew in addition to our kiddo, so we're anticipating some high occupancy camping trips...good to know we can all squeeze in and fog up the windows with our snoring.

And thanks again, I've been looking for a layout/floorplan drawing, the .pdf file had the '68 in there so I get to look and look and look!
I'm worried though, I don't look like her, do i still get to own one?

Ingrid - By your post above - EGADS TWINS!!!! with UPDOS.
I sure hope Peter does not expect a spread like that every night - we have a really big table in ours - but I am more worried about what to wear The storage bins aren't made for jeans I don't think And Peter is really worried about having to wear a jacket and tie That's why we have such a large hangin closet - everyone hung up their clothes We like the lived in look

Price when new?
This is probably the smallest problem I will ever have: my insurance company wants to know the price my ("MY" -- did you hear that? "MY"!) Tradewind (1966) cost new.
Over the past year I have read all the posts about getting an old AS insured for its value to the owner but right now my insurance company will insure it for what we paid for it, so I don't have to worry about anything extra til we recover from just plain buying it and start dumping money into its adorable little silver maw.
We had a brand new 1970 Fiat 850 Spyder and a brand new 1969 VW bus in 1970 for a total of about $5000. So how much could the Tradewind have cost?
I guess $6000 but I don't really know. I didn't see a price list on the Thor site for 66 models -
I am going to email Thor and see if they will help me out. Why would they help me out? Haven't I just proved I don't want a new one? or does Thor think it's only a matter of time?
Pinkflamingoes, where is your rig? Is it in CA? and when are you going to pick it up?
Did you get the post about "birds of a feather?"

heheh birds of a feather. As Fozzy Bear would say, "ahhh waka waka!!" Ba dump bump.
Penguin, my AS is in Wisconsin, a mere half a country or more away...I'm so glad you're as excited as I am...! Remember the time difference, I'm in California. I just wrote the down payment check!!! Finding trailers on the coasts were proving to be waaay more expensive than in the midwest, probably because it's turning into a fad to buy these, and this one in Wisconsin just wouldn't leave me alone, kinda like our cat when we first saw him at the shelter.
My husband is going to pick it up probably in June. I'm not going, because of the way he drives, and we have a young child to think of, the way DH drives on long drives is efficient but NOT fun!
So have you posted pictures of yours in the gallery yet!
isn't this FUN???

Penguins can't fly but they sure can SWIM!
It is SO fun! No pix yet because all the pix belong to the seller, we want to take our own! I will have to borrow my daughter's digital camera when we go to pick it up.
So you didn't choose "flamingoes" with the "e"? Even after the other fellow said "goes" -
How did you find it in WI? ebay, or one of these ads that are on a million sites? I have about worn out my computer looking at ads! Ours was on ebay and we have never bid before. We took a lesson the night before the auction ended, put in $100 and watched ourselves get outbid by someone else's highest bid.
So the big night, after we revised our max bid a hundred times all day, we popped in a big bid one minute before the end and we got the trailer. It was $1900 more than we originally said we would pay but (BUT) $1600 less than our big max. So there's a set of axles for us! Funny how that works!
Sooner or later, the three of you will ride together pulling that rig, no? But you don't want to do it the very first time? I will just sit quietly, white-knuckled, gasping a little, til I get used to it and start to remember that my husband actually DOES know how to drive!

Hi (Ingrid)
I am not sure where you can get the actual list price of a 66 - but our insurance company in Canada wanted a more realistic value for today. The best value calculator was at the following site.
We had our friends where we picked up the A/S basically do up an evaluation/appraisal based on the above information and had the local Aistream Salesman vouch for it on their letterhead. Ours was in excellent shape so we had it appraised at $8500US even though we paid half that for her. (Wow on today's exchange rate that is a value of $11569.00 CND) Sounds pretty impressive to me
Anyway it was all on the up and up and very honest - and as this seems to be the only valuation of Vintage airstreams available most insurance companies will take the word of the Airstream Dealers. (if you can find one that will do it for you. - We offered to hand out this Salesmans card up here for any potential business) - works for us. We were in a bind though and could not travel without it being insured! - Canadian laws - may not necessarily apply to US. The chance of driving without insurance is not a good gamble!!!
Glad to see a few more really excited about their new A/S's toys - will look forward to seeing some photos!
have fun and if you want a copy of the appraisal please PM me - be glad to help.

Got that one!
Yes, I printed that one off and put it in my "hope" folder a long time ago, and it did help me in my bidding on ebay the other night. I made a big fat bid because based on that article, I was within the realm of sanity to go that high.
Thanks again.

No, the one in Wisconsin found us: I posted a bunch of whiny notes about how we can't get one right now, but we're looking, and finally we decided that if the right one came up we'd buy it, and someone posted to sell theirs, we said no, it's too far away, we can't take time off work, we have no money, then I kept tossing and turning, there were other offers of closer ones but something just wasn't right about all of them, and then someone else offered to LEND ME THE MONEY to get the one in Wisconsin, and I decided it was a sign that this one was The One, and BOOM! The money came. The owner is being wonderful about the delay in pickup, doing all this research for us, answering questions, and so....
I can't jump on the bed yet until it's in the driveway, and not until my husband's not home. I fell off and sprained my wrist last time, it was in a hotel in Reno when he won $1200 playing Pai Gow Poker. He said he won't feel sorry for me next time!
I did ask the moderator about "pinkflamingoes"...the "goes" part is so perfect.
So have you ever done this before?
And, general Airstream public, what about insurance driving the toaster home? That's a good question. I seem to remember something about a 30-day thingy on cars for the time lapse between buying it and adding it to your own policy, and for test drives and stuff.

camping and insurance
Re: insurance: I called my insurance company today and they say they will insure it for what we paid. So all is well there. It's when we start putting money into it that we will probably have to hunt down another carrier, one who is more used to insuring old stuff that doesn't have a standard value.
No! never done this before. I have tent camped all my life, I am 55 now and my husband's back is not so good any more, so we haven't camped in over 2 years. We took a year off almost 10 years ago and camped in a tent all over the country. That was wonderful, but we won't be able to afford it again til I retire. BUT I don't want to wait til then to go camping!
This beautiful Tradwind is our solution. We need to get a better bed pretty quick or my husband will be cranky!
Did you put that $1200 poker money toward the Airstream?

Penguin, it's great fun to read about your excitement. We are just on the other side of all the anticipation, getting acquainted with our "new" '95 Limited, yet to take our first trip. You mentioned a husband and bad back and bad bed in an AS. We were in the same situation, which we solved by a trip to Sam's Club and purchase of a queen 2" Memory Foam mattress topper. He sleeps MUCH better and so do I. Just a suggestion Maybe this would work for you too.
