1964 Tradewind

This is the oldest question on the forum, but here goes. What is the value? I have looked at the Vintage site and know what is says but I am looking more for an owners opinion that has purchased one in similar condition and has done the work themselves..
I came a cross a 1964 TW today and have an opportunity to buy it. The outside skin is close to perfect only 1 small scrape. The 2 covers on the road side are missing, heater and water heater I think, the back window is gone and one side window needs to be replaced. The refer vent is in place and so is the back top vent cover, the front top cover is missing. I think the tank fill cap is missing too.
It is hard to tell because it is grown over but the single axel looks like it might have a little life yet. No propane tanks and no spare. Rock guard on front window is good.
Inside, Oh My Gosh. I would say the floor is gone, hard to tell because it is used for storage and I could only stand 1 step inside. The bathroom is all gone. No AC. I think AC was an add on anyway. There is some wood left (bulkhead and maybe overhead cab). I'm not sure if there is any other cabinets to make patterns from. I don't think the stove and refer are there and owner can't remember. I don't know about the inside lights, screens, tanks, etc. I can't tell the condition of the interior skin due to the bubble insulation that covers it throughout. I am in Alaska now and AS'S are not that common and I have looked at 20+ AS'S (1957 to 1985) and this one has the best outside of all of them except for one 31' that is too big. Every trailer I have seen has had dents in the caps, grapefruit size and bigger.
Woodworking is one of my hobbies and I have done wiring and plumbing as well, so I can do all the work myself. This trailer is $3000. I might be able to arm wrestle him down to $2500. Due to the current popularity of AS and the raise in prices is that in the ballpark or should I keep looking? Sorry this is so windy but I figured more info was better.

$2500 sounds very high for what you are describing, IMHO.

I agree. This 'Stream's going to involve alot of work and costs in materials/labor.

If the body is in absolute primo condition, then you'll have to decide how much to indulge the addiction - how much it's worth to you... with your skills, it'll be a labor of love.

If Airstreams are difficult to come by there and you are unable to travel to the lower 48, then only you can decide the $1K difference (or so). From what I've seen on the forums classified, there are alot of options out there... but for you, travel is required. Good luck! BTW, what are you towing with?

Sounds like a lot for what appears to be a good exterior shell and little else. Chances are if the interior is as bad as you describe, what you can't see is not good either. Sounds like a tremendous amount of work. But, like Jaxon said, if the didtance is factored in and you're up to it... Just an opinion.

Unless it's already been replaced, I highly doubt it has any life left.

Even $2,500 is probably $1,500-$2,000 overpriced for the condition you describe. Keep looking.

Your profile shows "Potters, ID", I'm not able to locate a Potters, ID (or AK). If you are temporarily in AK and are returning to ID, I know where a '64 Safari in better condition can be found for $3,500. It's located in Newport, WA. See: http://www.airforums.com/forums/563840-post316.html Good luck on your search.

Thank you for the input. Like I said it is the best shell I have seen so far but if I use the Vintage price guide the owner would have to pay me to take it.
One other issue I didn't mention was shipping to Alaska adds a substantial amount to the cost compared to the lower 48.
I have a 1/2T Dodge with a tow package that I would tow with. That was another reason I was pumped up about the 24', all of the other trailers have been at least 26' and I thought the 24' would be a better match for my truck.
I have found a 1967 Overlander that is in pretty good original condition. All the appliances are there, I got the burners to light and the stove would poof, but didn't have enough time to get the refer going, bathroom intact, electric and gas lights inside good, original plastic bins and all the owners manuals, wood is in tact, but water damaged, outside is good with no dents and one small (football size) patch. It needs axles, 2 windows, a couple of light lenses, fill pipe and fresh water tank, AC cover, needs door handle hardware and door frame is cracked, only floor around door is soft, and needs carpet and upolstery. It is a better deal but having trouble getting the title.

Great Pumpkin,
Thanks for the tip, I will try to call the owner to see if I can get some pictures of that trailer. The link is closed on it.
I am in Fairbanks AK right now. I see you have an Overlander and a 1/2T Dodge, based on your profile. Is that your tow vehicle and if so how does it do on the road. You posted before my latest reply and I describe an Overlander that I am seriously considering but have some doubts about my TV. Any comments you might have I would appreciate.

It tows my 26' fine. I wouldn't try anything any longer though.

Now let me define "fine".
I have towed at speeds of up to 70 mph on the freeway without any issues. I typically tow at about 60 top speed, but I've found myself creeping up to 70 a few times before I realized it and dropped back down.
I've got a Prodigy brake controller, and have no issues with stopping power. (and I have new Dexter axles on the trailer with 10" brakes!)
Towing up big hills, I do notice power/speed loss, but not anything that that would be dangerous or a hinderance to other traffic.
I'm probably pretty close to the 80% rule of towing capacity, but well within the specs of the truck.
A 1967 is still @ 26' (changed to 27' in '69), so you should also be fine for normal towing. If you are mainly towing in mountain ranges though, I would consider a shorter trailer or a 3/4 ton.

Thanks again!
This is the kind of practical information is why I'm here and so far everyone has been very helpful.
Did your Overlander have Henshen(sp) axles or spring axles? Did you do the installation?

Originally had Henschen Dura-Flex Axles, I replaced them with Dexters for 1/2 the price. Axle Measurements. It's a fairly straight forward replacement, I did them completely by myself, although a helper would have made things easier and quicker.

Also here's a little trick HiHoAgRV did that I wish I had thought of.

Dexters

I see the template trick you shared. How much modification was required to put on Dexters. I am in Alaska temporarily and I have very basic tools but I'm not afraid to make the change.
There is a 6 Robles here that can order Dexters and shipping is free if I wait for there order day. What I have read is measuring is a critical issue and I am sure the local store does not have experience ordering for AS.

The only modification they required was drilling a few holes - same type of modification the Henschens will require (for a pre- '69). Use the template tric, and it's even easier.

Accurate measurement is a must, but don't let that scare you. That's pretty straightforward. Read a few of the axle threads here and you'll be a pro in no time.
