1962 Tradewind barn find

I have found a 1962 Trade Winds I need to transport 550 miles. It is not road worthy. I can rent an commercial equipment trailer that has 84 inches between the wheel wheels. Will the the tires on this single axle trailer clear the 84 inch gap? I would hate to travel this distance with the commercial vehicle in tow to find I can not bring the Airstream home. The seller is the widow of the original owner, knows little about the trailer. It will be several days before one of her children can come and measure, I am trying to shorten the decision process. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It'll be tight. My '60 Tradewind, which is a leaf sprung trailer is about 81" tire face to tire face. I think 62's might have torsion axles, and I believe the hubs are a couple inches further apart (?). Beware, the body is something like 16" above road surface (bottom of tire), and is significantly wider than the tire face to face.

Good Luck.

I just went out and measured my '62 Tradewind. It's about 83 3/4" between the outside of the tires. The body width is pretty close to 90".

It's gonna be real tight! It may vary depending on the tires.

Can you possibly have someone with a flat bed type haul it for you? I had both my trailers delivered to me from other states via Uship.com.

Barn Find

Thanks for your help. The wheel wells on the equipment trailer are removable, and should gain me an additional 2" on each side to account for tire size variations. Who would have thought one can be so excited about rescuing a 52 year old outcast from a dark corner of a dairy barn!

You're obviously insane . . . and in good company (or at least in "like-company" . . . ;-)

When you get it safely home, post pictures. We'd love to see the trailer "as found" knowing how rough it might be. What a fun project!
