1960 Tradewind
Hello out there! I would love to know anything else about my new 1960 Tradewind! I am trying to coordinate an inspection with Colin Hyde but it is problematic since I do not have a TV presently! Anyway.... her WBCCI # is 3046 and she has an impression of an old decal under the numbers that says Wally Byam's caravan. Does anyone know of any additional information on her? Photos are attached. Thanks in advance! Susan

nice find
I noticed on your "hyperventilating thread" that post #16 offered up this resource.
http://vintageairstream.com/archives/60Tradewind/index.html
Check it out and study all the models that others have sent in to RJ Dial's most excellent website. While there read the restoration sections and his opinions and observations on restore vs remodel.
Send Colin photos while sorting out your towing needs. He will be helpful with model information but may put the fear of Alla into you if floor sections are soft. Be strong.
Looks like you found an very nice trailer. Lots of work ahead but it will all be worth it.
Also check into the many threads here.

Looks like a mighty nice early TradeWind. I'm sure its an Ohio factory built model as the CA ones didn't have the nameplate stating TradeWind. What is your serial number so I can add it to the Early TradeWind Registry that I've been collecting data for. Any interior pictures you can share.
TradeWind's are the BEST!!! IMO...
On edit: I see your serial number when I enlarged the photo. 240309D = which means it is a 24' TradeWind, 0 = last digit for the model year (1960) 309 = the 309th one off the Ohio plant assembly line and D = for double bed. It will also have a couch up front as the Ohio plant never put in a booth.

WooHOO! A Tradewind Sibling!
Susan, congratulations on your new prize! Tradewinds ROCK! You are going to so love this coach.
Its hard to believe, but your S/N is in sequence right before mine at 240310T. Brad, is the the first event of have two in sequence on your registry or have there been others? We're siblings! That is too cool.
Yes, that is an Ohio trailer. Mine is a twin layout and I belive your's would be a double. We all can't wait to see pics of the interior. It will serve you well to take photos of EVERYTHING. Even what you may think are insignificant details. A photo archive is a great reference during restoration and repairs.
I'll show mine if you show yours. Deal? You can find mine here.

WOW! We are siblings!! Use the search engine under forums and type in 2vets (yes I am a small animal veterinarian and my hubby is a cow veterinarian : ) ) You will see the forum post "Newbie who is hyperventilating about just buying an airstream!" I have lots of photos there! I just got her and I am still over the moon about her! We will see how I feel after she has been officially inspected! I love love love all of your photos- your tradewind is absolutely beautiful! My two teenage daughters would much rather had a twin bed set up like yours but I just could not pass her up! Your tradewind is in FANTASTIC shape and it has the coral pink bathroom just like mine! As well as the dangerous international furnace! I promise to send you more photos of her restoration-it will be slow going for now since winter is fast approaching here in northern Vermont! Private message me anytime! Susan

Update on 1960 Tradewind
My husband towed her to Colin Hyde's place yesterday! I thought I would show everyone her ferry ride over from Vermont to Plattsburgh, NY! I made my husband take a photo! Colin was terrific and gave us a VERY LONG list of things we need to fix. (Find a happy place, find a happy place). I had read the forums long enough to know what kind of trouble to expect. Need to replace part of floor in front and rear.... maybe axle.......all copper pipe.... The work that had been done on it was inferior and subpar and dangerous....! Wish us luck! I will keep everyone posted! I think he feels she has potential to go back to her original state but of course that takes MONEY! Our major goal for her is to get her roadworthy (not pretty) since one of our daughters will be leaving us for college in two years (yikes) and we would love to take a few extended camping trips with her. I would HATE to drag out the LL Bean tent again.......

Ferry rides are the beginning of very good times, even though a lot of work is involved. The very best Airstreams have taken ferry trips!

Hi Susan, The skin on the Tradewind looks great. What a find. Did you find out what Caravan the Tradewind went on? Good luck!

Hi Susan
Don't worry, that's not a long list...It's all got to be addressed. New axle for sure. And everything else will have to be done at some point in time. I would start by sending your kids to Community College That will free up money for the important stuff.
Still, it looks like you have lots to work with so keep the faith.
This is our Safari taking the ferry from Vermont to NY last summer. You are right Steve,

Hey Silverleeper! Thanks for the compliment-it lifted my spirits up! I have NO idea how to find out what Caravan the Tradewind went on although there is clearly an old square decal on her that says Wally Byam's Caravan on it. Can you give me any suggestions on how to research her more? PS Your images are fantastic- Sparkey is unbelievable-I love her yellow and white floors!

2vets,
Congratulations on your new, to you, 1960 Tradewind. We have one too!
She's beautiful, but we are obviously biased.
Here's a link to some early caravan information:
Airstream Caravan memories -Pee Wee Schwamborn
We checked the Around The World (1963-1964) roster and did not find your trailer listed. Ah, if only trailers could talk, what great tales they could tell.
Enjoy your Airstream-many great adventures await you!
Happy and safe journeys,

Thank you for checking Yhottys-even though she has a sticker I truly doubt she was on a caravan. Her refrigerator and her water heater are electric so she was a base model (or some refer to them as park models). She clearly was not designed for boondocking. I still love her despite her numerous flaws! Safari62- I only gave out the short list of things to fix! I tucked the long list away in the back of a closet!

I wouldn't discount your Traidwind so fast. Allot has probably changed in the trailer over the years. Try PM ing Fred Caldwell 47WeeWind VAC historian or Peewee PeeWee. Give them as much information as you can and see what happens.
Thanks for the compliments on the Airstreams. The 67 very bright and cheery inside.

Looks like a real nice one!
That was quite the ferry load. That black Chevy in front of you was not bad looking either!

It seemed in you original post you had found a real gem where just about everything was checked out and working (except winterized plumbing & heater), and you would be camping very soon. What kind of inferior work had been done?

I checked my 1966, 1975 and 1981 WBCCI directories. Number 3046 was listed for a couple named Neu from Albany, NY in the 1966 and 1975 Directories. They were not listed in the 1981 Directory. They are not listed as having participated on any caravans in either the 1966 or 1975 Directories.

Nice find! It is always great to see another Tradewind out there. We are kind of in the same boat as you. We are doing just enough repairs at the moment so that we can keep using it. Even though ours isn't that pretty right now, we are having a lot of fun with it!

fix the structure all the rest is just icing and can be done any time. Structure requires removing the icing, so do it first. Axles should be job one.
