I am thrilled you got your title Sandy!!! Now the work can begin and you know it will be alright!

Tina,
That is not good....I am glad I didn't know that before because I wouldn't have likely tried them. A person never knows when you go into these things how it is going to turn out in the end. I would certainly, certainly advocate that if there is no title with any trailer, walk away. It just isn't worth all the hassle.

Sandy,
On eBay there are some gas light options for your trailer. One is a Humphrey. I have bought a few things from this seller and have been very happy. He's always been above board and great to send more photos.

Maybe one is what you (your husband) will like.
Happy Friday!

Thanks for letting me know about that Tina. I am going to take a look and see if I can find something. His birthday is coming up in early summer and perhaps I can get one as a surprise. I was thinking of surprising him with another AS but he might boot me out if I do that again. How can someone be upset about getting an AS for their birthday?

I am not sure of what he would say....best to ask him. The craftmanship is nice on the step and it is really stable. Now we need to get the Pacer to point where it looks as nice.

Hang around very long and you will soon find yourself another Airstream along with the rest of us addicts. Can't say I didn't warn you.

Our first trip was planned for this last weekend. My family and our 77 31' were supposed to head to the Kings River. But then, Young John got pink eye (fabulous) and we found problems with the trailer brakes (yikes!)
But my husband said the trip shouldn't be a complete waste so I went alone. I met up with my dad and sister at a small, remote, self-contained cabin on the Kings River.
Then! It dawned on me why people have more than one AS. I said to myself, 'If only I had a small AS that I could tow with my 4Runner!' Big, giant AH-HA moment.
Got home, husband said he figured out the problem with the brakes and then proceeded to put the brakes on my new idea.
Mark my words, folks! It will be so! Give it some time, but there will be a second rig in our future.
So, to answer my own previous question....Ok! I get it now!

Funny story! I wish we could even begin to consider a camping trip at this point in the year. It is coming but slowly with snow on the ground and cold winds blowing through. Now that you understand the need for additional AS, keep your eyes open for your next prize. I have my peeled for another one or two myself. It gives you options and more to use when you go camping. I have a couple of friends that want to use ours when we get it done. I am not sure I will be willing to let it go for quite some time.....

Easy is underway
Easy is underway after a long wait. Remember how the PO said numerous times "No leaks and no mice"? Hmm..this might be what the dog was crazy about when she first came into the trailer.
We took all of the old upholstered cushion pieces out and wrote down the measurements and placement. They are going to the dump first thing. What a smell...50 plus years of .....whatever. Now DH is making the cabinets as exact replacements for what was there. This one is going to be exactly as it came from Airstream...only improved.
Love the old zolatone....would really like to have it back. No one up here has heard of it so if I want it, I might have to learn paint spraying as DH says "No way!" How hard can it be? Time to consult the experts.
It looks like they built the cabinets fairly well but the finish on them looks pretty slap dash. It seems like they put them in place and then hit them with stain only as far as they could see and that was good enough. Is this right? It is an almost walnut stain color or is that just from age? Inquiring minds want to know.

More pictures of Easy
Here are some more pictures of the work done on Easy today. A true feast for the eyes. I have learned to take tons of pictures because later you realize you should have pictures of things you thought you had taken tons of pictures of.
I am so anxious to be going on this one. Seems like it has been forever....maybe that is just my impatience. This one has my heart. I have to take her down to Fargo when she is done so Steve's wife can see her. She's going to be beautiful.
On a side note, the kids are telling me I can't call her Easy. Too late. That's her name and she's a beauty. I have visions of trips around the area having lots of fun with her. The weekends can't come fast enough now.

Working in the cold...the show must go on
More work done on Easy today. Looks like they took an old dollhouse and remade it into panels for the floor and bed. I like recycling but that might be a bit much. There is a patch on the curbside wheel and where the toilet once was. I am guessing new wheel wells will be in our future. The floor is a mess. I am hoping we don't have to do a shell off restoration but so far, it isn't too promising. Tomorrow we will see more....
When I came home today DH had thrown all of the hooks, hangers, and assorted hardware in the trash. Luckily I rescued it after a half hour of digging. I plan to clean it up and repaint it for future reuse. I like the look of it and will be pleased to not throw any more away than we have so far. I can always change my mind but I want this to be as spot on to 1959 as we can get.
Loved the electrician's tape repair to the plumbing. Not sure that would pass inspection but they must have gotten by with it. Inventive and resourceful anyway.
I am considering stripping the inside skins and polishing....am I crazy? I don't think Zolatone is a common item up here....

Seeing frame for the first time!
In honor of Valentine's Day, all I want is a wide variety of gift cards to vintage trailer places....I need belly skin, a new axle, stove, plywood, heater, water pump, fridge, mattress, cushions, and a bunch more minor stuff that all adds up to big $$.
Since I don't think I'm going to be getting those today as gifts, here are some photos of mostly DH's progress during the last few days. Remember it is still pretty cold up here so it takes time.
First picture is the bed platform done in birch and it has a black walnut trim piece, second picture is the trim I have cleaned up and prepared for re-installation, picture #3 front end cap down, #4 is the middle interior section of Easy which looks fairly decent/clean, #5 is my work space in the shop where I clean window and access door trim up, 6 is the old bed frame we are replicating and improving the design of, 7 and 8 are the first of the frame exposed today. It looks fairly good but will have to make a closer inspection of the entire frame to determine. DH says the rear piece on the frame looks pretty corroded so some welding is in his future.
DH has rebuilt a number of the interior cabinetry pieces already and is numbering and storing them to use as we get to that point. Once it warms up here a bit, we will be both working on it every weekend we can. Amazingly, when he took the interior skins down, there were very few bad spots of insulation in the walls; no mouse trails like the Albatross. All the wiring is going to be torn out and we will power wash the interior/disinfect with cleaner a couple of times before we start insulating.
If we have frame work to do we now have the equipment so we are prepared. We have lots of items to purchase for this one as well but hopefully not quite the expense that we put into the Albatross. Guess any plans for me to retire soon are out the door until we get these beauties restored. Good thing I love my job and don't see retirement for a few years yet.
I am so glad we stuck out the struggles with getting her. There were times I thought "What have I done?" but now it is seems worth it. She is so beautiful . I can hardly wait to take her out the first time. Can you tell I like her?

Coprolite Bonanza
DH got the rest of the floor up today and we finally discovered why the trailer had such a smell to it despite dumping the cushions and all the contents. Seems as if someone just let the black tank fossilize with contents intact. Uffda.
Now we need to figure out how the original tank set up was supposed to be because it is gone. Anyone that knows the way it is supposed to be and is willing to share the info, I would appreciate it.
Now that coprolite collection is all gone and I have all of the inside trim cleaned up along with the inside skins. Tomorrow might be wire brushing the frame or deconstructing the pieces of belly skin. The weather was beautiful here today but next week is going back into the deep freeze so the outside in the trailer work could stall.
Need to start ordering some supplies like belly skin, POR 15, steel for frame repair, rivets, and plywood for the floor. Now is when it really starts to get expensive....but it is going to be so nice when she's done.

More deconstruction
Some of the latest photos of deconstruction as it continues on Easy. First one is the sway bar on the hitch, second one is the upper cabinet above the sink ready for stripping in the shop, 3rd one is the hole made by removing the Duette vent for the Duette stove, and the last is the frame looking forward.
DH thinks he might do a shell off restoration on this one just like the Albatross because he wants to get a good look at everything and get additional welds where he needs them. I was hoping for a faster restoration this time and we might have less to do due to length and better frame to begin with but it will definitely still take a lot of time. Part of it is having a perfectionist for a husband but then I know it is done right.
The wiring is all down now and the belly skin will be removed soon. Hopefully it warms up enough this weekend to do the first interior power washing of Easy. Now I have to locate some wheel wells as replacements and figure out how we are going to install a furnace to replace the missing floor heater. It is great to be moving forward even if slowly.
