eric - congrats on your purchase. it looks in good shape. you got a real deal on that airstream. the small ones are very hard to come by and will usually go around 5k in the shape yours in in.

i'm just getting back into working on my 56 flying cloud. it has the orginal axle and leaf springs and i'm changing out that setup to the dexter torsion axle. you can do a search on here and you'll find a ton of info on axles and such.

post pics of your progress, you're about where i am when i stopped in november for a small hiatus.

are you planning on taking the shell off? again a search here will give you a ton of info. the frame will probably need some attention.

good luck!

Great deal Eric. And obviously you are not afraid of tearing into it. The pics you put up are a great help at putting this all into perspective.

Thanks for sharing and we'll be watching for updates as your project progresses.

Barry

Oh yeah, for those who's Airstreams speak to them let me tell you, it's even worse when you also use vintage cars to tow. They also talk to you and can be very noisy at times. It causes me to get this glazed look in my eyes and my wife then starts checking the bank account to see if another one has convinced me to buy it.

Eric, it takes vision to work on these trailers. You bringing this unit back to life will not only give you satisfaction and pride, but will encourage others to do the same. I am trying to finish a 60 Pacer in time for the Fla. State Rally.
Will try to post a few photos. Congrats on your new/vintage trailer!

Eric, here are some before and after interior photos.
Not quite finished with the interior, but close...next will be the exterior if the weather will hold out.

Thanks Guys

I've been reading quite a bit of great info here And I appreciate the feedback/support. I'm hoping to not have to do a fram off. I'm going to pull the floor and the rest of the pan tommorow. The frame seems to be in good shape. The 75% I have inspected seems pretty solid. One beam in front of the axle will have to be replace or reinforced it appears. I'll keep checking in. Thanks again. Eric

Nice find!

Eric,

You stole that trailer for $1800. Instead of replacing the axle, just get new back plates and replace the brakes, bearings and all at one. Just make sure no springs are broken.

As for your frame, is it box frame, right? Check for thinning especially up front, if Airstream did not close in the box up front - it would let water in there, and as the water went down into the box frame, it rusts and thins the frame. That is why we did what we did back in Oct 05 timeframe on our SOTR - Sweet Sovereign of the Road

Also, where are you located? I don't see snow, so must be in a nice area.

Rob

I looked at the pictures below, great find and it will be a wonderful trailer. BTW my trailer never spoke to me but it did develop a close relationship with my credit card.

Thanks Jim

Eric, the 3 burner stovetop is a Princess, and the gas only Fridge is a Dometic. Both original to this unit. There are no holding tanks, but someone added a shower, with a 6.5 gal. elec. waterheater in the closet...replaced that with a 2.5 gal. and got the closet back, for the wife...Hope to be almost finish with this unit in 2 or 3 weeks, if weather and my back hold out..

I'm back I worked on the trailer today for about 4hrs. Made some progress
removed some more interior skin ..everything looked great, Unfortunately or fortunately looks like i'm doing a full frame off. The tongue was replaced at some point. Unfortunately the PO just scabbed a tongue from another trailer on...the big issue is its doesnt match up...and is being held in place by a 4x4 piece of steel it flexes like crazy. I'll post a pic in a bit. So looks like I'm going to search for a welder I definately need some more clearance so adding a few leafs may be the ticket. Rob, I'm located in Apollo Beach Fl. No snow yet this year Must be global warming. I grew up in Boston and had it w/ snow Never looked back. Thanks for all the interest everyone

Hi er1,

It would be better to have new spring packs made according to the ride height that you want and the weight that the trailer was originally designed for.

Flip it

On the Pacer I had, the axle has been flipped. I liked it that way as it had good clearance and rode fine for 7000 miles or so.

welcome to the club . there's some great threads here for shell off renovations. check out members uwe (a 63 for me), norcal bambi, arkonuta to name a few. there are others that i can't think of at the moment. do a search and you'll find 'em.

you want to figure out how the c-channel, belly pan and lower exterior skin all connect at the floor level as there are a couple of different ways it has been done. the best thing to do is search here and on the web for anyone that has done a pacer.

good luck and keep us posted

anybody have any ideas about how to remove the blue stripe/sticker from the exterior? I was going to try the hair dryer/putty knife route. Maybe a adheasive remover would be the way to go? Any thoughts? thnx Eric

Congrats on your purchase!!! You must be so psyched!! Here is a link on decal removal that you might find helpful.

http://www.airforums.com/forum...=decal+removal

Don't use a putty knife ...that could do major damage!

Here's another question My title says its a 59...I was told it was a 58 and it loks like one to me...any opinions? Also, it has the original split rims..I've done some searching and there obviously not worth saving. Can anyone recomend a good faux period tire/rime replacement? thnx Eric

A steel wheel with baby moons always looks good, IMHO.
