Picking up 1959 Overlander Friday. Driving down to NC, eating pork butt, buyin a load of hickory for smokin my own butts this summer, and gettin another AS. I am a little concerned that my wife thinks it's a good idea. That means she has her eye on something to balance my indulgence. This will be the big one. The trailer we get ready for trips of 3 to 9 months in a few years. Still have work on the Caravel but will not be doing the extensive rework we'll be doing on the Overlander. New axel goes on it next week and we are ready for the season.
I have 4 new 7 14.5 wheels with new bias tires which arrived today. They look like trailer tires. If you see us between NC and CT give a wave.

I am home, at last. The trailer is parked behind the office. On the way home replaced both batteries on the truck as they got fried and the alternator. The later twice. All on the same day as we sped back for a vet appointment Monday. The people around Chambersburg Pa were super. A young gal delivered two batteries and an alterator to me on I81 are the PA rest stop. Took awhile but got them changed. The details will follow but if it weren't for the Advance Auto store and then Sears (yes they still have places with mechanic working on Sunday) it would have been a mess.
ps. Got home to find someone ran a car into the block wall of my garage, pictures to follow. This is not a pleasant thing at 1:30 in the morning.
Trucks fine, trailer will be the Bat Cave Express and is fine but may be cursed and need occult welcoming ritual. The garage and the car are not fine. Drunk female arrested for leaving the scene and of course being under the influence. Now I can relate to Chevy Chase.

Glad to see you got it back home, to bad about all the problems. I like to think most folks here in PA are great when you find yourself in a pinch.
I can feel the pain of your towing experience. We picked our trailer up in Texas and on the way back home in Nashville I lost 1,2,3,5 and reverse. Luckily 4th gear got us the rest of the 800 miles to home. I couldn't begin to guess what a tow job for my truck and trailer would have cost from that far out.

I hope the construction on I81 near Harrisburg didn't cause you to much grief And I'm glad that at least they got the person responsible for the damage you discovered upon arriving home. Good luck with the 'new' AS.

Harrisburg wasn't nearly as bad as the part of I78 east that is old RT 22.

So I have started to remove the extra layers of flooring.
Took out carpet in front and the 1/2" particle board underneath which was added to the floor. In the kitchen there was an addition 3/4" layer of rather good grade plywood which is now out. Still have the particle board there to deal with. One area is bad under the front edge of the streetside window. Rotted right away. But the frame member is in good shape. Have another area where the fridge was that looks like it will be a problem. Hope it doesn't extend far under the particle board into the kitchen space. Pictures on the evening post.

Step by Step 1959

Greetings Paul!

The tubes under your coach likely served either of two purposes. They were generally used to store either the sewer hose or the pole-type awning hardware. Another potential use would be for the storage of flag poles. Recent model coaches often have similar tubes made out of plastic piping for storage of sewer hoses and flag poles.

Thanks Kevin. I think I'll keep them after a little work if they aren't in the way of the hold tank that's in the plans for over the axels. There is no rear hatch storage so that makes sense that they are for the sewage hose. A awning setup would fit in one as well. International model, two trunks.

Just don't mix up which tube is which

Our new 62 Bambi has a similar tube for the stinky slinky, as it has no other external storage for the slinky as well.

95 degree here today. That should dry out the AS. To many projects getting in the way of getting started on this. Would really like to get it stripped out and new wall treatment and floor before Region 1 Rally which is 5 miles down the road. Not looking good right now.

Bat Cave Overlander?

Hey Paul,

Did you get that Overlander from a guy named Richard in Bat Cave? If you did, I saw that Overlander and fantasized over it some. Unfortunately, my husband has the know-how and I am stuck with the desire and very little know-how, so "we" had to get something a little more turn-key.

Bat Cave is lovely, did you think so? I was driving back to Raleigh from Asheville (just west of Bat Cave) with my daughter and I had seen some ads by Richard, so we took the Bat Cave route, came around one of those winding curves and there were a couple of Airstreams parked! So I chatted with him a little and we went on our way, ultimately to get our Trade Wind and leave that Overlander for you!

So enjoy!

Connie

I thank you. My wife isn't sure yet but showing anticipated interest, like other stuff has to get done first. It really needs alot but that's what I was looking for since I knew I would be redoing the interior of whatever I got. This will be a long trip AS, Alaska, Baja. ect. I didn't want one that was ok now only to give me trouble along the way. Ever system will be new. The frame, skins, windows, and door are all that I'll keep. Looks like the floor will be OK also.

Floor really still looking OK structurally . Needs to be cleaned up and hope no surprises under the layers of tile, backing and glue. Everything is out of the trailer except the tub, the kitchen overhead aluminum cabinet, and fresh water tank. Tub seems to be held in by the drain . Only has one small crack in the surround asiele side front corner. Looks easy to fix. Anyone know if the 59 tubs were fiberglass or another type of plastic. It doesn't seem dried out. Pictures to follow.
