Screw on Porch Light 1964

Has anyone seen one of these before? It was in my AS closet. Screws on to the outside on the round socket. Very delicate.

I have a similar one. It's kind of fun. I put a blue bulb in. That looks cool reflecting off the shiny alumunum. I tried a red bulb. It looked nice.....but sent the wrong message.

I noticed these on a pic from one of my grandparents' airstream... look at the end of post #7. Pretty cool find!

I wish I found one in my closet. I've been searching for one for a while now. Hang on to it, don't let it go....that is unless you want to sell it to me.
I'm pretty sure they were an option in the sixties from airstream.

Yep, we have a couple of them, slightly different shapes...they we an option available from the old Wally Byam store and others way back when. Cool!

I, too, discovered a detachable porch light in one of the front lounge bins when I purchased my '64 Overlander - - - -

These light fixtures and their corresponding electrical outlets were offered by the Wally Byam Store as Shari mentioned, as well as through some contemporary RV stores (we had one on our '69 Sunway truck camper). From the number that have been discovered in our Airstreams, they must not have been as popular with Airstream owners as with other contemporary RV owners.

A year or two ago, someone was offering reproductions on E-Bay. They were a very close replica of our originals, but the problem was that they weren't offering the needed electrical outlet/cover that would allow for a retrofit to a coach not originally equipped with the porch light receptacle.

The porch light fixtures can be quite a conversation piece at a Rally or during a caravan.

I sought oen of these out too as a must have. It now rides in the closet. Turns out the bright light is hard on the eyes when sitting outside the trailer. The light also is a beacon to every biting insect for miles around that you are open for their meal. They look very cool but do not function well for my needs. Maybe if I install the red bulb...

The glass shade that came with my coach (and the NOS replacement that I purchased at a WBCCI International Rally Fleamarket) are both heavily tinted and don't seem to attract the bugs. When traveling in particularly insect-prone locations, I do carry a yellow "bug-light" that I can utilize to make the light less attractive to insects.

Actually, if you look, this one had yellow plastic lenses. That allowed for a regular bulb to be installed.

Unfortunately, the yellow plastic has degraded and fallen apart on the other sides.

I wonder if there would be an appetite if I tried making some of these.

We found a dozen or so at an RV salvage yard as well as the corresponding outlet. We sold them at the RMVAC Rally this last August. We also looked into replicating them...the problem is, we couldn't find a source for the correct ring on the light - the screw on part. We found the outlets to go on the trailer, but not the screw-on ring on the light itself. Without that, the light just kinda hangs there and isn't secure in the socket. It seems these have been replaced with modern weather proof outlet covers...

Reviving an old thread instead of starting a new one.

We have two of the screw-on cap style receptacles on our trailer... and no porch light. I thought maybe someone would be interested in a Gift of the Magi type trade, if they happen to have an extra light with the threaded collar.

And just to be as complicated as possible, one of our plugs is 2-prong (cap is 1 and 3/4" across) and a brass plate... while the other is 3-prong (cap is 1 7/8" across) and an brushed aluminum or steel plate. I imagine either would shine up nicely.

Tossing the idea out there, thanks!

This the one that I have. Sadly I chipped (it's all glass with the black painted) a corner. It wouldn't show if I turn the damage to the back but the chipped hole is spreading. Also the socket that's anchored to ends up behind the open door. That placement wasn't well thought out.

Funny lookin' little things, aren't they? I love that they're sort of part of a "nesting" process at a campground - roll out the awning and welcome mat, tighten the stabilizer jacks... and attach your little porch light - right out of a 1950s cul-de-sac.

Also, in the old days when maximum width of "mobile homes" and RV's was strictly limited to 96" these lights would stick out too far to be legal while moving. The ability to detach them kept the width of the rig within legal specs.
