Mystery Switch

Our 1985 Motorhome has a similar switch and it controls an outlet under the sink which is for the small hot water heater installed to make instant coffee or tea.

I looked, and there is no outlet under the counter. I thought it could be for the furnace (nope) or the A/C (uh-uh), or some kind of electric water osmosis machine.
It is too old to have even thought about a dishwasher.
Someday, my curiosity will get the better of me, and I will start pulling stuff apart to see where it goes.

Yeah I'd like to see how you made it. Did your old valve and collector look like the big metal one in the pic I posted??

I knew I was forgetting something. I forgot the pic of the updated valve assembly.
Yes, it did look like a big hunk of brass with a blade in it.

Now lighting with gas.

I went to Ace Hardware again today ("watch batteries? Aisle 31....You're welcome.... No, I don't work here. ") and picked up a pair of Coleman gas lantern mantles. I then installed one on the original Humphrey LP gas lamp in the galley. After installing it, I lit the lamp for the first time since Gerald Ford was President...
Here is what it looks like now:

Lamp looks great lit up. I am scared of mine since it looks like it may have puffed smoke or flame up onto the ceiling at some point. The PO covered the damaged Zolotone in spots with tan spray paint.

Speaking of lamps...I noticed from you picture that you have the round ceiling fixtures like I do. One of mine is missing the big round plastic cover. Have you found a source for replacements?

BTW, I painted my 3 rectangular light fixtures (like yours over kitchen and bath sinks) with super shiny metallic silver paint today and they look awesome. I also painted the 2 fixtures on either side of the gaucho (ones with covers that look like perforated screens) the shiny silver. I had orginally painted them all the same tan color, but aluminitis must be setting in and the silver paint was calling.
Next I suppose I will be turning those tan ceiling fixtures into shiny flying saucers....sure looks better than tan w/ rust spots.

I forget if I posted it or not, but I repainted those square fixtures with white semi gloss enamel. They look much better than the rust-bloomed white they were previously.
I have fortunately not needed to find replacements for the round lights, I would expect I would have to make them myself
I personally prefer with the older coaches, to keep things in a white and wood pattern, with a touch of silver here and there (like the clock). I think the post-1970 trailers look better with more silver accents, although I am not sure why.
I do know if you want silver paint, I found a color called "Aluminum Ingot", which is a gloss metallic grey. Not as glaring as the old chrome aluminum color, I have painted the tongue and rear bumper with this color, and it turned out nicely.
As for the lamp, probably the mantle broke, or the PO had the flame turned up too high, to cause the smoke and soot problem. If you want to try using it, the mantles are about $3 for a 2 pack from Ace hardware, I got the ones with the twist wires on them to attach them, as I can't tie a knot to save my life. Light the mantle without the gas on, and when the mantle is done burning in (the flame and red spots will go out), turn the gas on a little bit, and light the mantle with your aim-n-flame lighter you use for lighting the water heater and stove.. Adjust the gas flow until you have a warm glow like you see in my photo above. And if you are nervous about doing this, you can do as I did, and have a fire extinguisher in one hand while lighting it.

Terry,
The metallic silver didn't come out as shiny as the cap color indicated, which is good. I'll post some pics when I get the first one installed. With all that darned dark paneling I think they will knock the edge off that "hunting-lodge" feel we have going on

Actaully I was digging around in the trailer yesterday and found that the PO had stashed about a half dozen of the original mantels (gauze-y looking things?) in the doo-dad drawer, as well as a whole bunch of original Ogden water filters. When we get the gas hooked up (after we buy some tanks!) I am gonna have at least 2 things handy: 1/ Your instructions for lighting the lamp and 2/ a fire extinguisher ! Thanks.

New clearance lights, and a black water adapter photo

I got a package from Vintage RV supply, with a new set of clearance lights for Goliath inside. The box also had some dangly lighted Airstreams on a wire for whenever we get the awning working again. I took a pair of photos of the lights in action, as well as the photo of the slinky adapter I promised Squrgurl.

Extra filament not hooked up?

While playing with the lights, I noticed the taillights had a 1157 bulb in each of them, and one of the filaments was not used for anything. This would be the parking light filament, and the parking light job was taken by a #67 bulb in the Bargman taillight. The taillights are now brighter, bright is good. I don't want some half-blind tourist to ram the trailer because he didn't see it. This is still possible, but there is less of an excuse now that all running lights are operating.

All cleaned up and everywhere to go.

Before I took Goliath back to storage this weekend, I thoroughly scrubbed the outside, including the roof, and finished sweeping and cleaning the inside.
The upcoming Florida State Rally will be the first verifiable rally this trailer has made an appearance at since the Notre Dame Rally in 1984. Here is a photo of proof that Goliath was there. The little green and white sticker is a leprechaun with "WBCCI '84" printed on it:

Power jack

We installed a "newsed" power tongue jack on Goliath today, and found and replaced a worn out circuit breaker. The breaker works fine, the jack...
We installed the power jack this afternoon. Some of you may know I injured my back a few months ago, and sometimes with the cooler weather we are having right now, it doesn't want to do what I want to do, so I had a friend come by and help me with it. We removed the replacement jack that was on the coach, it had been replaced sometime in the early 1980's, as evidenced by the date stamped on it. Then we installed the electric jack in its place, where I found out there was yet another problem with the wiring. There is a circuit breaker under the right front corner inside the belly pan that had died a grisly death by rot. After it was replaced, we had power to the jack. i then called my wife out to show off our handiwork. It went up, then down, then up once more. "Hey, this is great! No more endless cranking!" Then I pushed the button to lower the jack again. Nothing. Not a wimper. "Aww, *&^%$^&!!!!!!!!" It seems the switch chose that moment to shuffle off its mortal coil. After the obligatory cursing and gnashing of teeth, I removed the switch. It is off to Ace Hardware again in the morning, as I now have a coach I can't remove from my tow vehicle. Ah, the joys of Vintage Ownership...

Things I Learned Today:

I learned several things today, not all of them good things...
1- I learned that the circuit breaker we installed yesterday performs as intended.
2- I learned you can't use a double pole, double throw momentary contact switch as a jack control switch. It will short out and cause the circuit breaker to cut out. See #1 above.
3- I learned never to trust what color the spray can of paint says it is.
4- I learned you CAN re-install a manual tongue jack when you have to.
5- I learned that there are people that really shouldn't own trailers.
6- I learned that no one stocks switches for tongue jacks, and they are kind of expensive.

After the power jack debacle, I towed Goliath back out to the storage lot to park for the week. When I arrived, I found a very large, heavy enclosed car hauler parked half in his space, half in my space, and half in the space behind him. The manager of the storage facility had to move the trailer so I could park. Which brings me to:
7- A half ton Dodge Ram pickup looks really silly trying to tow a 15,000 pound trailer.

The switch arrived late last week, and I soldered it into the jack. It again works as intended, a good thing, considering the switch was kind of pricey.
Here is the new jack, wired, able, and ready:
