Good thing you're still not rebuilding this trailer. Nice touch-up work!

Good thing it was 54 degrees yesterday and I got the lights sealed. It's 27 now, dropping to 10 tonight. We are thinking about camping this weekend, supposed to be 70 degrees.

I guess I need to replace the door gasket. Warm interior air is leaking out and melting the snow. The water drips out, froze the door closed and made a huge icicle. These old campers require a lot of work, I don't see how anyone has time to rebuild one, I sure don't.
You guys got snow last night, right?

I'm Not Rebuilding this Trailer
I haven't done much not-rebuilding work in a few weeks, it's rained almost every weekend for the last few months. Yesterday I removed the 2 closet and the pantry doors because, guess what?, they were delaminating. I was able to reattach the original veneers on the smallest one but the 2 big ones were way too far gone and I just glued on new. Just before dark I got them stained. Since they still stunk I didn't put them in the house, they stayed in the garage all night. Mississippi has humidity, remember? Well I also forgot to close the garage. This morning was supposed to be spray poly day and get them sealed up. Well overnight the veneers bubbled. I'm talking lifted 1" in places. Ugg. Normally I just iron it back but this wasn't going to have any of that trick. I had to heat the veneers and peel them off then iron them flat.
Of course then it starts raining so I can't spray poly, so the doors are inside waiting for the weather to play nice.

Still not rebuilding, just a little touch-up work. I'd say you are well within the parameters of your non-project!

Hi
Sounds like it's time to move to a nice dry desert location Then you *will* have time to rebuild the trailer (which you aren't doing ....).

Remember when I lost the vents driving thru the hurricane Harvey winds? I stuck an old galvanized one on the front and have been slowly working on an idea. I have a few of the old rear vents, nice rounded edges so I figure I could cut one in 1/2, extend it and insert a skylight. I cut up the most beat up one I had tore into it. I used VHB tape to attach the tempered glass then sealed the edges.
Still not rebuilding this thing.

I'm Not Rebuilding this Trailer
I was wondering whether you had decided to not not rebuild it anymore. Glad to see you are back to not rebuilding it!

That’s an improvement, not a change, so it’s not a rebuild. I’m sure Wally would agree. I like it!!

For folks not familiar with old trailers, the fridges were not fully vented to the outside. Air was drawn into the system from the interior under the fridge, going up behind the fridge. Combustion gasses exited the top of the flue and were sorta funneled into a space inside the wall, up and out of a small hole in the roof. The cooling air off of the fins simply came back into the trailer. That probably makes some folks freak out now a days but as best I know, nobody kicked over dead in this particular trailer. The biggest drawback to this method is all of that heat that stays in the trailer makes it really hot in the summer.
Even though I'm not rebuilding this trailer, I decided to add a fridge vent system.

Nice! Still good though, as this is merely a safety / comfort improvement. Definitely not rebuilding.

Comfort is the driving factor, full sun July heat here in Mississippi and the AC just can't keep up.
A friend is rebuilding a '63 globetrotter and didn't need the fiberglass interior and exterior vents so I grabbed them. The inside piece is a completely different curve so I had to make some aluminum side pieces to fill the gap.
Test fitting.

I still have the interior skins from my '63 so wouldn't it make sense to copy an original vent hole profile? Unfortunately the shape is much to complex for me to mimic...so I'll just make something simple
Is it too late to change my mind?

Outside top is done. I even found an old louver from my '63 to add to the lower door for a new air inlet.

That’s really funny!! 😂 Maybe that hole was cut on a Friday or Monday at the factory. Or, the trainee wanted to try his/her first cut! Or special air flow?
The original refrigerator now will only take 30 hours to get cold instead or 48!
I would say “nice work”, but you’re not rebuilding anything!!

I think of that hole and giggle every time I read that Airstreams quality has gone downhill.
I did get the inside vent installed tonight. The only thing left is to block off the air intake below the fridge door. Nothing fancy here, I'm going to cover it from behind with some prodex and call it done. I really should put some screen over the roof vent and behind the lower louver I guess. As hot as it's been this February the wasps will be out soon.

Hi
I think that your efforts to properly recycle and deal with all this hazardous waste are commendable. Having this all go off to a sorting plant in China would have a major impact on the state of the planet ....
In terms of AS quality going down hill, my grandmother loved to point out the issues on an AS interior (back in the 1950's). Each time I get into mine, I can still hear her describing what I'm looking at .....
That said - it's not *authentic* unless you duplicate the original hole !!!!
