I'm Not Rebuilding this Trailer

How did y'all know it was a scratch and dent surplus salvage yard faucet that I found rolling around under the cabinet? Wow, you guys are brilliant! (Mrs HiHo is watching this thread and I told her I wasn't rebuilding this trailer, thanks for the help!)

Bob

The Lovely Mrs Hiho snagged it on eBay.

We took the camper, we call her 'Alice', for a boon docking trip last weekend. You might wonder 'Why' we would take a stock, no gray tank, original electric layout trailer when both of our others are much better suited- led's, solar, water tanks that have level gauges...

I dunno why, the 'charm' of old stuff maybe?

I should point out that 56 year old toilets lack all aspects of charm. What they do have is a foot operated spring loaded flapper dump valve that, if your foot slips off, it, um, launches 'stuff' upward. That is until the flapper breaks off and falls into the bottom of the toilet. See the little round white plastic part?

Then you have to make a stopper to keep from fumigating the trailer. Plastic cup, wood screw and a stick.
Open lid, use stick as a handle to lift out cup. Complete your business and return stick/cup into toilet. No need to flush, it's a free fall into the black tank.
This does make it easy to gauge how full the tank is.

Of course the first bolt that holds down the toilet came looses easily. The second was stuck and so corroded it wouldn't grab a wrench. But once I got it loose I found a second use for my cup/stick.

New toilet should arrive tomorrow, good thing that I'm not rebuilding this trailer, I just don't have time.

Hi

Well, there *always* is a "health and safety" exception to any rule set. I'd say this fits into the "health" category. More or less a mandatory state / federal imposed sort of thing. Thus not your fault.

===

So not to ... errr ... poke my nose where it does not belong .... err ... how does one handle a "no gray water" trailer in this day and age? I very much know how we used to do it. Campsites today don't seem to like that idea ....

We use a 12g blueboy to catch gray. We generate about 2 gallons/person/day and can conserve to get below that. A public dump station is a few miles from home so I detour by it on the way in.

The new terlet arrived today. After looking at the old one, it was probably worth the price if for no other reason than to avoid cleaning the old one.

I'll get it installed this weekend and just toss out my cup.

Hi

One advantage of the tank outside the trailer. You don't get part of the crew asking "how can you be sure the reading is correct?" every 12 seconds after it gets to 50% or so. You can just go look at the tank ....

Mrs O&S really LOVED the "charm of old stuff, & lack of charm"!
LOL....hey, like all sellers, "it worked just fine the last time we used it!"...."in 2012" & "it originally came with a life time warranty, you know, it's on the wall".

There's nothing like being a "field engineer" & working with what you got!!

Are you sure "someone" didn't "accidentally" break it just so it has to be replaced??!!

You know Robert, not quite into the whole on-line thing. We do have him using a cell phone and he's almost up to texting.

And yes, HE is rebuilding THAT trailer!!!

It took a whole:10 to install the new toilet. No leaks. The photo does remind me- get some toilet paper before my next camping trip.

I'm Not Rebuilding this Trailer

Two modifications I've been wanting to do for a more useable camper, add extra battery capacity and mount the spare tire, are almost a single project. I built a vented battery box to hold 2x 6V batteries and installed it under the sofa. This allowed me to remove the original battery box that was on the front of the shell and mount a spare behind the propane tanks. I still need to do some welding on the tire mount but it's usable. The original battery wires exit the shell behind the tire so I added a quick disconnect where I can plug in a portable solar system.

Hi

Just a safety note:

On a battery box, you want the vent hose at the high point on the box. You then want the hose to be low at the box and high at the point it exits the vehicle. It should not have any dips in it to trap gas. Is this a big deal? You are dealing with an explosive mixture. I have some third degree burn scars to remind me that "stuff" does happen occasionally.

====

I do think it's impressive that you spotted that battery box sitting in the shower when you bought the trailer

That's a good point, when I said 'vented', it has to be done properly. The bottom vent goes thru the floor and bellypan without swooping upward and the top vent (as seen in the photo) slopes upward and out of the shell. In my younger years I had a battery explode as I stood over it. No injury but it ruined my "I'm with Stupid" shirt. Ms HiHo hated that shirt.

I confess that I had to build the box but it used some leftover ply. The interior is epoxy encased (leftover also from my friends shell off project). The only stuff I bought were the 3 vent fittings and hose but I do think I'm going online and find another "I'm with Stupid" shirt.
