Helllpppp!!!!

Just today bought the "Silver Bullet" '63 Overlander and I'm pretty overwhelmed. I have not a clue about how things work, wiring, floor plan etc. I guess I'm looking for sights that will help me hit the floor running. Tomorrow I plan to clean her out and assess as best I can where I am and what my priorities are.

Welcome to the forums!
There are several of us here that have 1963 Overlanders in various stages of repair.
If you want to check out the thread I have going about our adventures rehabbing ours, do a forum search for "A New Challenge". In it you will find things I did, things that the trailer needed, how it was fixed, how stuff works and where it is located, along with some handy tips on where you can find that difficult to obtain window crank.

We have found vintageairstream.com also very helpful. They have a great list of resources (http://www.vintageairstream.com/rr_home.html) and photos of various vintage airstreams. One thing you might find helpful is his list for what to start with first. http://www.vintageairstream.com/FAQ/...html#Restoring

Happy Overlanding!

Perspective is important. Having a realistic one often requires more patience than you might have on hand in the beginning. If your situation is like mine was, you might have thought you would jump in and have your Airstream cleaned up and have all necessary repairs taken care of in a couple months. I have a more realistic perspective now.

I have gone from two months, to 1 year, to now after having identified all necessary repairs and located sources for all parts and other items), confident that I will be enjoying a properly reconditioned, safe and fully operational unit in just less than two years.

I have enjoyed the restore more since having concluded that this is a long process. It was a 12 foot wall. Now I have learned how to step back at a far enough distance, and to start building steps at a comfortable enough incline to scale the wall. Don't allow yourself to be overwhelmed and good luck ! There are lots of nice people here who know a lot !

Yeah...what he said!

I had the same thoughts like "oh, just a cleanup and hubby can inspect stuff, a few minor repairs, and we're sipping margaritas in the trailer in Key West in a few months". Meanwhile, back on Earth, fast forward to 2 months later and we have the bathroom gutted, are repairing rusted frames and thinking about all the upgrades we can do while we're at this stage of the game. The scary thing is that it's actually fun. (Either that or my life is so dull that replumbing a 42 year old trailer is what I look forward to on the weekends).

With the pre-1964 trailers I am realizing that we are sort of left to the mercy of salvage yards, Ebay, and sellers classifieds for finding parts. Suppliers like Vintagetrailersupply.com
sells alot of great stuff for post 64 trailers as well as some we can use or adapt for our use, but basically original parts are hard to find. I guess the thrill is in the hunt!

I made a post here with some ideas of where to start.
My 63 Overlander site is here.

Please post some pictures of your Overlander when you can.

It is best to start from the outside bottom to top, then inside the trailer - make a list - do one task at a time - someday it will be done....
