Flying Astradomes??

Hi,

We're planning a long trip late this month and I'm debating about fixing the Astradome before we leave. I plan to do the same fix as shown in this blog post.

I've heard about Astradomes becoming airborne. Can you share your experiences or even urban legends? Is there a tried and true way to secure them for 1000's of miles of travel?

My other option is to leave my wired-down temporary galvanized cover in place, then do the install down south.

Thanks!

John

I did mine just like they did in the blog, except I used rivets instead of nuts and bolts. I've only got one season of towing on it, but so far, so good. I doubt that it will come off as long as I remember to close it before heading down the road.

I also painted mine silver, as the white stood out like a sore thumb.

I suppose you want to keep the "venting" function? If so, shouldn't come off unless damaged. Today seems to be "duct tape" answer day, but if you have it secured then head to better weather before worrying about it.

Safe travels...

Thanks, guys.

I think I'll give it a shot and -- if the lifters start to loosen -- tie or tape them so it won't lift.

Well, after 7 years of towing with no problems, I lost mine a few months back. It broke off at the hardware, so I still have the lifter mechanisms.

I like the venting capability but it's not critical, the windows and fantastic fan in the back do a great job of moving air. So I think I'm going to replace it with a Maxim skylight.

I too, lost mine last fall. I watched my wife close it when we were packing up, and noticed that she didn't tightened it. I meant to snug it up, but forgot. We were travelling in heavy winds. When we got home it was gone. The worst part was the loss of the lifters. The new aftermarket lifters appear stronger, but I like the way the old ones functioned better. Oh-well.
