More progress on the Traveler this week. The DC system is almost complete and the closet is nearing completion as well.
We got the mattress cut to shape and working on the mattress cover tonight.
The closet doors are trimmed to size & shape and I was able to get them hung today. Now I can set the latches before I and stain and oil them and the privacy door.
I needed to know what time it was the other day so...........

Spare Tire Rack
More progress on the Traveler. I finished the front yesterday with the LPG rack & plumbing, wiring and spare tire mounting.
I used 1 1/4" square tubing & then some 1/4" x 1" flat stock and all held in place with lug nuts. The lug nuts mean that I will have a couple of spares and the wrench needed to change a tire. It is real simple and looks like it will work nice.
I did have to move the LPG rack forward a little to make some room but still have room for the jack to work.

Tested the LPG System today...very nice to have everything functioning after so much work & replacing.
The Heater would most likely heat the inside of this little trailer so much that we go outside or at least leave the door open if above 32 degrees!

I really like your tire/wheel rack mounted on the A frame, and I plan to do something similar.
Would you please post another photo or two of the rack and how it attaches to both the tire and the frame?
Thank you.

I am going to do a little more polishing 1st of the week and can take some more pictures then when I take it back off. I'll use a tape measure when taking the pics to help.
Glad you like it, it's simple and only cost a few bucks since I already had the welder and lug nuts.

Thanks, Steve. That would be very helpful.

Patti saw the headboard that (Greg) 50s Aluminum built and wanted me to make a taller one similar to theirs.
I was also finishing the vent for the freshwater tank so they were finished together. After gluing up the framework and skinning the one side I took some left over copper tubing and put it on the inside prior to gluing the skin on the other side. Here are the pics of the completed bed area.

The Traveler made it to the Newport Dunes Vintage Trailer Rally over the last weekend. All went well with the Traveler and all of the work that was completed. It trails very nice with the new axle and all of the running and brake/turn lights worked as they should.
Here are some pics of the Traveler on her first rally

We are back from our winter travels in the motorhome and now getting ready for a vintage trailer rally in Big Bear, CA. I am wanting to complete the Krefft installation so yesterday I began to test the propane system. But I would like to ensure that the installation is up to today's standards.
Considering that the Ammonia Absorption units are basically the same but these are almost 60 years old Airstream didn't concern themselves with the baffling like the units of today have. So proper ventilation of the Krefft will be my concern
I just talked with a guy at The Norcold Guy and he was very helpful!:
http://thenorcoldguy.com/norcold-tec...s-the-venting/
From what I got out of our conversation the most important thing with the ventilation of the cooling unit is the Cooling Fins. We need to ensure that the airflow is directed to this area and then exhausted to ensure efficiency in extreme conditions. The Flue should also be directed to the vent to help cool off that area.
I have a short length of flexible automotive exhaust pipe that directs the flue to the vent to test. This appears to work out great so a more permanent solution is planned. The problem here is that the flue needs to be removed to install the heater element for 120 volt operation and then reattached to help remove the heat from the flue.
I am not sure yet but I may use a sheet of aluminum and simply cover the rear of the cabinet to ensure the airflow. I may even try to use an insulation blanket.
The Temperatures he stated were approximately 350 degrees for heated air at the flue and 130 degrees for the ambient air at the cooling unit.

Easiest way to direct the flow over the coils is to close in the back of the Krefft with an aluminum sheet. Next I used some hot rod insulation to try and keep the heat going up & not out.

Cool found a Honda Eu1000i for sale on CL. I picked it up for cheap but had to clean the Carb. Took between 15 to 20 minutes to do the job correctly but now it runs great!
1000 Watts is fine for now and we are ready to go dry-camping.

Here is a look at my ventilation for the Krefft.
I am using 1/4" Baltic Birch Plywood with an Automotive Insulation that is rated at 700 degrees to direct the airflow. I used the aluminum molding from Vintage Trailer Supply, not real happy since it isn't very flexible but it worked.
The flue is stainless steel flexible Automotive Exhaust Tubing that is covered with Automotive Fiberglass Exhaust wrap to ensure that the CO gets out of the area. I have a small fan at the upper exhaust area that only draws .16 amp so it will run continuous and is very quiet. That is a Muffler Bracket securing the Flue.
The last pic shows the removable panel so that I can use the 120 Volt Heater Element.

The Krefft uses about 20# of LPG in 6 or 7 days when the temp is over 90 degrees. I was concerned so I tried a smaller burner, a Teddington model TZ. The burner did not create enough heat for the Krefft to work. After 24 hours all it did was to make the plate sweat so I put the original back in.
The first pic shows the original functioning with the Teddington TZ next to it. The second pic shows the original next to one that I got from 57Vintage in a trade (thanks again 57Vintage!). After I make sure that all is well with my recent work I am thinking of trying this burner next.

I think I got the better end of the trade. Your pieces allowed me to keep the door interior stock. If the burner I sent you isn't working out, please pass it on to 'Goranson' in Yakima, WA (FOUND!! Wally Byam's 55 Cruiser - 1956 European Caravan trailer). He's redoing Wally's Cruiser and I gave him the mechanical guts of my Krefft for the restoration.

maybe you did but then I have what I needed. I wanted the burner for a spare but haven't tried it just yet because I am still in the test mode. The Krefft has been running on LPG for the 4th day now and holding around 37-40 degrees. I'll next be testing the shore power side before I try your burner, I have already made sure it functions.
thanks again!

I found a DOMETIC Temperature Controller that is being modified to fit the Krefft.
Sorry it took a while but everyday life got in the way. Anyway got the shelf for the refer completed and sealed today. Tomorrow I am wanting to replace the LPG copper tubing and get the refer installed...more to come.

Thank you for such a helpful thread! We just got our Krefft this weekend and am working through your thread trying to take in the restoration! First thing I did was plug it in and nothing, but then realized the element is missing, as is the male part of the plug. I'm interested in the particulars to see if I can put together an element, even if I have to use a modern style plug and thermostat. I am also in the market for one more of the shelves that isn't notched, and 2 of the pegs that hold it in. Other than that it seems complete. It will have some minor repairs to the inside door at the top, and under one of the corner covers on the box where the material feels like some type of rubber. If you have a parts unit or know of one please let me know. Link to pictures of our newly acquired unit are here: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f492...162191-12.html
Thanks for any help you can give us! - Scott

The dimensions of the element are in an earlier post *#85). I made some other changes & will try to help with that as well but my Thermostat is a Ranco K50.
Have you tried using the LPG? mine had a leak so I had to get the unit repaired. You may want to test before going much further. I found that the refrigerator running on LPG consumes almost a gallon/day so electric will become important.
Still have the receptacle & plug sorry but have been really busy with life. Our Post Office is only open on week days & I have been out of town with my rentals.

I haven't tried it yet. The PO said it worked when lighted with a clicker but didn't get real cold but he hadn't run it very long and didn't have it baffled at all. That's next on my agenda! Thank you for the info. I've been looking at modern elements but they all seem to have a 90 degree bend in them. No worries on the plug. I'm 6 months at least from touching wiring. Your thread (and craftsmanship) is awesome.

Wanting to be able to dry camp I decided to replace the original AC overhead vent fan with a DC fan.
I found this fan on ebay and it is reversible. Made by Silverstone and it appears to be of high quality, here is a link;
http://www.silverstonetek.com/produc...id=711&area=en
Very easy to modify the Traveler.
Remove the overhead light to gain access to 12 Volts DC. Disconnect the AC wiring and run a 12 Volts DC + wire to the fan location.
Remove the original AC fan with AC wiring and mounting plate.
Next I took some 3/4" X 1/16" aluminum angle drilled to mount the fan and toggle switches (On/Off and Fwd/Reverse). I decided to mount the new fan 90 degrees from the original in case I wanted to add a second fan in the future.
Works great and probably moves close to as much air as the original with only .32 Amps.
Still need to do a little work here but more to come including a screen.

New tires, went with Goodyear Endurance ST 205/75 R15. BUT they are just a little larger in diameter and a bit wider, they look great.
