He was driving from Fla to NY.

Called me from Ga and said I thought you said this rides like a train on a track!

He complained of trucks passing him pushing him around, and some sway in general.:(

I went over many things to check we found nothing wrong.

When he got to VA I asked about the cams, bingo, he thought the dual cams needed to be greased (metal to metal), he put axle grease on them.

I told him to clean that all off.

All was well for the remainder of the trip home.

Just thought I would pass this on.

I generally use the smallest swipe of Vaseline on them just to keep them quite.

I have a Husky hitch with equalizing bars that have a habit of dropping off en route. I put in a new pin to stop this but still have a problem. At the recent Branson rally I bought another used hitch (no idea of brand). It's lighter and easy to hook up the bars but the trailer doesn't travel level. Seems to be about 2 incher higher so trailer slopes down in the back. The Husky hitch has a bar with bolts that lower it to the correct height. A friend who is a pro welder looked at both hitches and didn't see any problem taking the front half of the husky and the back half of brand X and creating a new one with the correct angle. Any of you pros out there can weigh in on this idea?

:oFirst off - I am sorry for starting a new thread covering old question. I tried the search but for some reason I could not find the information I was looking for.:o

:blush:My Problem - I have a 1971 Overlander Twin model - 2006 GMC 1/2 ton 4 door Pickup wint locker in rearend as the tow vehicle. When I was gathering up stuff to go get the trailer (I live in smalltown Oklahoma) the only WD hitch I could get anywhere was a 10000 lb Equalizer E2 with 1000 lb bars. After reading various threads and pm-ing some people (which I was told (Do not tow your Airstream with the 1000 lb bars) I contacted the company I purchased the WDH from. They said they could not get just the bars. I contacted Equal-i-zer and here is what they said:

Melvin

Thanks for bringing your question to us. This is one that I see fairly frequently with our Airstream customers. There seems to be a misconception about the Equal-i-zer that's actually based more on the functionality of other hitches, and it just kind of carries over to the Equal-i-zer. The spring arms of our Equal-i-zer are made of a high-grade steel that's meant to bend and flex and absorb shocks - other hitches don't use the same grade and type of steel, so they are more rigid.

When it comes to tongue weight, make sure that you're considering what the tongue weight will be when fully loaded. I find that most people will actually under-estimate the weight of the tongue on their trailer - mostly because they don't spend all day talking trailer stuff, whereas I do. Even with your tongue weight of 750, the 10,000/1,000 lb hitch would be a good fit for the weight you have. If you had an 8,000/800 E2, you'd have to set the tension quite high to give you the best weight distribution possible. Does that make sense?

If you would really like to go with a smaller lee-way, you can. You can order in a set of E2 spring arms through any dealer that carries Equal-i-zer or Fastway Trailer Products.

One thing, though - make sure whether you have an Equal-i-zer or an E2 hitch. The E2 hitch you can swap different arms into the same head. The Equal-i-zer you can't. It will say in the hitch-head which type of hitch you have, whether it's E2, or Equal-i-zer. It's stamped in the metal.

Back To My Question:

I believe the brocher I have states the trailer tongue weight is 430 lbs and total weight is 4400 lbs. Is this empty or loaded (I know loaded weight depends on a lot of factors) I just need a WAG as to what it might weigh loaded.

Ok will my current TV and TT setup work if I purchase the 600 or 800 lbs bars or should I just leave everything alone.

Thanks In Advance
Mel

We just completed our first long trip, Minnesota to Arizona, with the new trailer and Equal-I-Zer hitch set up according to mfg instructions. No problems, all went great (the Airstreams certainly do tow nicely). However, as we proceeded into southern states (OK, TX) we came upon small but noticeable ruts in the pavement of the two-lane highways at different locations, probably caused by heavy truck traffic and hot temperatures. We have traveled this route many times and never noticed it with our camper van or car. But with the trailer in tow, and at a wider track than the truck, it was very unnerving. Felt like it wanted to wander constantly, but I did not see any sway of the trailer. I felt I had to slow considerably to feel safe. On the other hand, the trailer was rock solid on smooth roads, crosswinds, or trucks passing.

I am wondering if this is a typical trailer towing situation? Would the HaHa/PP hitches eliminate this sensation of wandering (not swaying) in these uneven, somewhat rutted road surfaces. If so, I would install one.

When hooking up our trailer we noticed cracks in our hitch where the trailer chains hook onto our '04 Silverado. Upon further inspection by a qualified truck repair shop, cracks were found also in the main part of the hitch (under the truck)! Our truck was not on the 'recall' list for hitch problems, so it is unknown what caused the cracks--wear/tear or manufacturer. We have been home only 2 weeks after being on a 9000 mile trip towing our 30' AS. So...feel very fortunate that we made it home with the cracked hitch!

Dear Friends:
- I have made up my mind to buy a ProPride Hitch (new hitch by Jim Hensley). I like to do a lot of research before buying and have found some threads on the Hensley Bump. The most descriptive is on Good Sam Open Roads Forum Good Sam ERS Open Roads Forum: Travel Trailers: Dynamics of the Hensley 'BUMP'?
- The bump can be dangerous to say the least and seems to defy Hensley's claim that the trailer cannot control the TV when equipped with a Hensley hitch. Seems that it most certainly can with disastrous results if on wet roads when turning if brakes are not applied soon enough.
- My question is: Has ProPride solved the Hensley Bump with its new design, or is it something to be aware of?

Be kind to everyone,

How might an Air Safe Hitch reduce sway?

The Air Safe hitch site claims it can reduce or eliminate sway. It also claims to greatly reduce shock transfer between t.v. and trailer, reducing structural damage to both, and drive train damage to the T.V. If this is true I am reaching for my wallet, but is it?

I believe the reduction in shock transfer is true, but is that in itself a benefit to my relatively light truck and trailer combo? Maybe not, but also reduction in sway? How can this be?

To their credit, I see that the weight distribution/sway control assembly is mounted to the rear of the pivot at the air bag. That would seem to keep constant and relatively even tension on the w.d./sway control bars of my Equal-I-Zer hitch, so when driving over uneven road surface, the sway control would remain constant. Without the Air Safe, the sway control would vary significantly as tension (and therefore friction) on the bars increases and decreases with the pivoting at the hitch ball.

If the decrease in sway control (a bump in the road) happens at the moment a large truck passes, a loss of control may be initiated. Could this be the basis for their claim?
