PICACHO/TUCSON UNIT RALLY April 19-21, 2013

Directions to KOA: I-10 from Tucson Exit 212: Follow service road to stop sign, turn left. KOA is on right. From Phoenix Exit 211A: Follow service road for a mile, stop sign next to church and turn right. KOA is on right. Warning: Do not follow GPS once you get to the exit…instead, follow above directions.
Reservation for campsite: Call 1-800-562-4186 or 1-520-466-2966. Make sure you mention “Airstream Rally.” When you make your reservation, there will be a deposit for the first day which will be $33.92 which includes the 10% off plus the tax. If we have 15 rigs, the additional 10% will come off when you arrive. Cancellation policy is as follows: Call within 48 hours of date of arrival to receive a refund, minus the $10.00 cancellation fee. Full hookups and a “Kanine Kamp” for exercise and doggy bathroom breaks. Check in and check out: 11:00 AM.
Reservation for Saturday night dinner (5:30 PM) in the Chuck Wagon Steakhouse (restaurant at the KOA): Call 520-466-9933. Place your order for dinner when you make your reservation. You will have a choice of a 6 oz. Filet, a BBQ Pulled Pork Dinner, or a Chicken Breast Dinner. Dinners include baked potato or fries, salad, cowboy beans, and a roll for $15.00 per person. Drinks will be extra. Soft drinks, coffee, tea, beer, wine, or cocktails will be available for purchase.
Fee summary: Camping: $33.92 per night. Rally fee: to be determined (includes 2 breakfast meals and coffee for the weekend). Saturday night dinner: $15.00 per person plus drinks.
SCHEDULE
Friday: 11:00 AM Arrive anytime after 11:00 AM
4:00 PM Happy hour in meeting room (in the main building where office is located)
5:30 PM Potluck Dinner in meeting room. Outlets for crock pots but no other cooking is permitted. Please bring your own dishes and utensils tonight and also for both breakfasts.
Saturday:
8:15 AM Breakfast (pancakes and sausage, juice, coffee/tea) in meeting room.
Activities: Ostrich Ranch, Observe or participate in Sky diving, Hike in Picacho State Park. Lunch is on your own.
10:15: depart from KOA; carpool to Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch. 10 minutes from KOA. Directions: I-10 East, take Picacho Peak Rd exit #219, follow the signs 1 mile on the southeast frontage road to the ranch.
Ostrich Ranch ($14. Per person if do both feeding and Monster Truck Desert Tour) Cost: $5.00 per person to feed the ostrich and Lorikeets (birds); includes feed and nectar. (30-40 minutes) Cost: $10.00 per person to ride on the Monster Truck (holds 20 people) and takes you on a 45 minute narrated tour through the ranch and desert to teach you about ostriches, saguaros, Picacho Peak and doing ostrich fishin’. If we have a good turnout, the ranch will split us into two and half will feed while the other half tours. They are busy on the weekend so 10:30 should be a good time to accommodate our group.
Skydive Arizona (Free) Location 4900 N. Taylor Rd. in Eloy (phone 520-466-3753). [10 miles northwest of KOA; 19 minutes from KOA] Directions: From KOA, get on I-10 West to exit #208. At end of exit ramp, turn right onto Sunshine Blvd. Cross the railroad tracks and go left on Route 84 which is also Casa Grande/Picacho Highway AKA Frontier Street. Turn right on North Tumbleweed Road which takes you to Eloy Municipal Airport and the flight school; parking is free. Take your chair and watch the skydiving (or actually participate in a tandem jump from a small plane). Also a state-of-the-art simulator is available to try out this sport without ever leaving the ground OR observe people doing this (seating is provided for observation). A snack bar is available for lunch. We have done this with another RV group and ended up spending 3-4 hours there. You could easily have time for the ostrich ranch and observing skydiving.
Hiking in Picacho State Park ($7.00 per vehicle) Take I-10 East from KOA, Exit 219, Picacho. Phone 520-466-3183. There are a variety of trails ranging from easy (.5 mile) to difficult (2 miles which goes to the top of the peak). Entrance to park is $7.00 per vehicle. There is a Visitor Center with exhibits and picnic area.
5:30 PM Dinner in Chuck Wagon Steakhouse (if weather is nice, we may eat next to the steakhouse outside where the dinner will be cooked).
Sunday:
8:15 AM Breakfast (coffee cake and fresh grapefruit) in meeting room. 11:00 AM Check out time; safe travels to you all!
Note: If you want to come a day earlier or stay a day later, the KOA owners (Frankie and Jerry Cross) said there will be campsites available. Additional activities nearby include Casa Grande Ruins National Monument at 1100 West Ruins Drive in Coolidge; phone 520-723-3172. Also, Arizona Sonora Desert Museum is at 2121 N. Kinney Rd in Tucson; phone 520-883-1380. At Exit #208 there is a Denny’s and a Subway.
