Working backwards...

Posted 12-02-2016 at 05:59 PM by westcoastas

A recent post by an airforums friend (Hittenstiehl) reminded me that I had attempted to start a blog here on airforums but I was not sure how to go about it. I have posted several observations and experiences on Facebook over the past two years that I think I would like to share here. Perhaps the blog entries will be more for myself as a linear record of our experiences while living on the road. I have realized that I don't have the discipline to maintain an active blog - it takes a lot of work. I have noticed a few blogs that begin with good intentions but soon peter out; I greatly admire those that can and have maintained an informative blog. Some of them have helped me immensely.

I think it would be too much work for me to pick up shortly after beginning our adventure; many of my early observations are already posted in threads on the Full-time forum. So I think I will work backwards...

A few weeks ago two friends of mine, one of them a veteran himself, challenged me to help spread the word about the incredible dilemma of suicide among our veterans. The challenge was to commit to 22 pushups per day for 22 days - a frightening number that reflects the number of veterans committing suicide each day in our country. I have seen several videos of others performing push-ups in their living rooms but I thought I would take advantage of our time spent outdoors. I have read that for many even professional therapy hasn't been enough to help veterans battle their demons. I came across an outfit that uses adventure in the outdoors and thinking outside of the box to help bring veterans out of their darkness and move back into the light. The challenge pointed to a link that helps veterans: www.22kill.com. I will be donating to vetexpeditions.com - an outfit started and run by two veterans. After two years of living on the road and spending a lot of time outdoors, I can attest to the good medicine that adventure can offer. (The video was filmed in the Eastern Sierras of California and Snow Canyon State Park, Utah.)
