Life in the Slow Lane - Golden, CO

Posted 07-11-2014 at 09:39 PM by silverlabs

Today is catch up day for blogging. We enjoyed the campground we were at yesterday but all of the warnings of fellow forum members came to fruition when it came to the internet. We gave up trying.

This morning we got up with plans to head straight to Golden, which is outside of Denver. We had a scheduling SNAFU and didn't have time to really do anything in Colorado Springs except plan to return.

The day started by waking up at 7 a.m. Texas time, which was 6 a.m. mountain time, but the sun was up. I got the dogs out for an early morning walk and, as we were getting organized the hubs decided to go with so we waited for him.

There were lots of SOB lined up in parking lot fashion across from us so visibility was limited. Kona, the yellow lab....QUIET lab, started barking. Her bark sounds something like a bazooka that early in the morning. And she would not hush. I finally followed her line of sight just in time to see feet, human feet, walking between those SOB motor homes. So much for a peaceful early morning walk. I texted the kids to inform them of the new threat to mankind and to assure them that they need not worry. Kona would protect them at the next encounter!

We got breakfast and packed up in fairly short order. I noticed that the 36Ft AS was packing up as well. They had already mentioned they were headed back to California today.

I was so pleased that the lady came over to say goodbye and we had another chat. I was able to ask her how it really was when they lived in it for 9 months. Then we talked about cleaning. I planned to do a little sprucing up today when we got to Golden. She said she cleans the windows when they land at a spot for a few days. I had not thought about that so promptly added that to my mental list. She mentioned that she uses a little vacuum and I thought to ask which one, remembering a forum thread I had read. She uses a small Dyson. We concluded our conversation and wished each other safe travels.

In the meantime the friendly guy in the large SOB had engaged the hubs in another conversation. Turns out he is from Flagstaff, near our family in Phoenix. He made a suggestion of where we should stay there, which was very helpful.

We hopped in the truck, programmed the nav system and headed out for Golden. We are learning something new each day. Today we thought to check the check-in time at the next stop. Turns out it was 1 p.m. which gave us way too much lead time. I called and asked if we could check in earlier and they said possibly, we thought we might make it by 11 or 11:30 but they could not promise anything.

We needn't have worried. Denver traffic took care of that. We saw this as good practice for driving in Vancouver and Seattle and made it to our destination with no issues.....right at 12:00.

Dakota Ridge RV Park was easy to find. It is very convenient to Camping World, which was good, because we decided we needed a trip there. We have a really nice, end campsite, with grass! Our dogs were so happy when they touched real grass again! There is also a nice view of the mountains.

We were delighted to see two AS sharing our campground street, a third one further over, and a Bambi! Some of them have numbers on them and I will get those and post them tomorrow.

The weather has been a bit stormy today so we haven't been out much. We, well, I decided that we need awning lights so we look friendly. We took the dogs in and they did quite well. Our only incident was a random small dog that barked like crazy at our dogs. Darci, the victim of the barking, handled it like a champ but Kona and I were walking an aisle behind. Both of us jumped out of our skins and almost had a heart attack! I think it startled everyone in the store! Once Kona and I got our feet back on the ground we passed without incident.

We bought a set of lights and took them back to the trailer only to find that they won't fit. By this time it was raining so we waited for the storm to pass before we ventured back to the store. We decided that lights need further study and possibly a post on the forum.

We went to a really good place for dinner. We elected not to cook sausage in the trailer. We found a grill and bar that served Chicago style pizza. It is 331 steps from the campground, according to their literature but we drove so as not to melt in the rain! We had a delicious pizza and an adult beverage to go with it as the rain poured down.

We took the dogs on a quick tour of the campground. It is pretty quiet as nobody is out and about. Tomorrow we are planning to make it to one of our favorite places of all time - Vail Village. I hope we find the outdoor cafe where we got the delicious portobello sandwich!
