A 60 watt warm
Sometimes people just surprise you. She looked ordinary; aging bottle-blonde, little white dog, big purse and a big honkin’ car.
Ordinary enough that is, until I saw her wheel into a tiny county park, towing a 61' Bambi, do a three point turn and back that Bambi into a blind opening between to very hard trees. No hesitation, no fuss, no adjustments. Perfect the first time.
Kathy I learned, was anything but ordinary. She invited me into her Bambi and talked a blue streak while she got set up. First order of business on a chilly day was to plug in a 60 watt light bulb. According to Kathy - if she kept her door closed, that 60 watts would, over time, be enough to keep the chill off "saves propane and much less trouble than a boyfriend" she said.
Turns out Kathy had been an Airstreamer for many years. She had towed Airstreams across 2 continents and at 80+ was still going strong. She'd just popped into this county park to get away for the weekend and meet some new folks.
Over the next 2 days I learned about her adventures, her salty tales of lonely men whos' opening line often involved offering "... and I’ll just get that trailer backed up for you ma’am", how to get a snapped spindle fixed in Mexico and most importantly I learned that the taste for adventure doesn’t dim with age but goes dark only when it’s not engaged.
