090613g - Taos

Posted Today at 07:43 PM by chbocca (Toaster Travels)
Out of Durango, we took US-160 east through Pagosa Springs to US-84 back down into northern New Mexico. The drive here, the country, is just beautiful. Horse ranches, handsome farms. Water is everywhere. Each turn more beautiful than the last.

Not long after US-84 transitions to US-64 in New Mexico, we crossed the Continental Divide, which is where rainfall divides...to the west, it drains to the Pacific Ociean, to the east, the Atlantic. Approaching Taos, we came across several amazing...

090613f - Durango

Posted 07-02-2009 at 08:25 PM by chbocca (Toaster Travels)
We loved the town, the area. And the Durango KOA. Friendly, scenic, nice laundry, close to town...but not too close, free pancakes by the creek.

After we set up, and before heading to old town for a night out, got some good advice from folks at KOA about best place to get new tire. We agreed on trying local Walmart Superstore.

I brought the flat tire with me in the Jeep. Gave them the size, and asked if they had Michelins...wanting to avoid the Goodyear Marathon. But,...

090613e - Four Corners

Posted 07-02-2009 at 07:34 PM by chbocca (Toaster Travels)
From Gallop we left early, north on US-491, to traverse the Navajo Indian Reservation during cooler temperature. We pulled over to side of road a couple times to photograph some of the great natural monuments. You do really get the impression that this area was once under water a long, long time ago...driving on the floor of an ancient sea.

Pulling back onto highway, we experienced our first trailer flat tire....driver side. We were not going fast, nor was the side of the road rough....

1965 Safari

Posted 07-02-2009 at 01:00 PM by safari65WI
Last week, we were offered Grandpa's Airstream. It had been stored in a barn since 1977. My husband has been wanting to travel Route 66 in his '62 Chrysler 300, so we thought, sure!! Let's give it a look. I had never been in an Airstream and had not really seen one up close.
We travelled to the farm and pulled it out of the barn and I thought it was pretty nice, considering the 30 years of mouse nest and ??? The shell had clearcoat in good shape, no dings or dents, lots of original equipment....

090613d - Gallop

Posted 07-02-2009 at 12:13 PM by chbocca (Toaster Travels)
A needed stop on way to Durango. Did enjoy the margaritas at historic El Rancho Hotel, as well as its lobby filled with photos of Hollywood stars from glorious days gone by.

And, liked our campsite number...

090613c - Painted Desert

Posted 07-02-2009 at 10:58 AM by chbocca (Toaster Travels)
Painted Desert Visitor Center and Painted Desert Inn, Interstate 40, Exit 311. The inn is a National Historic Landmark within Petrified Forest National Park, opened May 24, 2006 after 18 months of much needed rehabilitation. The building functions only as a museum and bookstore today, without overnight accommodation and food service.

Awesome views.

We did not do the much longer car trip through Petrified Forest this first time, but the stop was great nonetheless. And,...

Southern Saskatchewan Trip June 2009 - 6 Wood Mountain

Posted 06-30-2009 at 11:52 PM by bolerama
After leaving Cypress Hills and passing through Eastend, our destination was Wood Mountain -- an odd name, since this is one of the few natural grassland preserves in Canada. No trees, but gorgeous biodiversity in plant and wildlife. We wanted to stop at a place near Grasslands National Park--Canada's newest national park.

We arrived at Wood Mountain Regional Park near supper time. We were distracted by an incident that had just occurred (I'll explain that below...), when a man walked...

Southern Saskatchewan Trip June 2009 - 5 Eastend

Posted 06-30-2009 at 11:03 PM by bolerama
After we left Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, we headed east toward the center of the province. This was our hottest day -- 100F. The Jeep fortunately didn't overheat. We stopped briefly at Eastend, the home of Scotty the T-Rex. This area is badlands. The museum housing the dinosaur is amazing to see on the outside, but we didn't have time on this trip to go inside. The museum is built into the side of a hill, so the roof is actually grasslands! It is like the original house of the Ingalls family...

Southern Saskatchewan Trip June 2009 - 3 Cypress Hills

Posted 06-30-2009 at 10:39 PM by bolerama
Updated 06-30-2009 at 10:41 PM by bolerama (trying to add pics AGAIN)
Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park crosses the Saskatchewan-Alberta border. It is the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains. Perhaps because of its altitude, it has virtually no mosquitoes! That made for some lovely outings, since the mosquito is the provincial bird of Saskatchewan!

The hills are covered with a 100-year-old lodgepole pine forest. The height of the trees is amazing, and so was the scent of pine. Hiking can be strenuous at times up the hills, but well worth it....

Southern Saskatchewan Trip June 2009 - 4 Cypress Hills Winery

Posted 06-30-2009 at 10:15 PM by bolerama

Near the Cypress Hills I.P. Park is a winery...yes, a winery on the prairies! They converted their ranch to a winery after the BSE crisis a few years ago. It is like a little oasis surrounded by rolling rugged ranchland. After a wine-tasting, you can head to the patio for a tasty lunch. It was priced well, and the wines were surprisingly good. You can get grape wine, but also more local specialties like Saskatoon Berry, rhubarb wine (their top seller), chokecherry, and even mead!

Southern Saskatchewan Trip June 2009 - 2 Cypress Hills

Posted 06-30-2009 at 09:55 PM by bolerama
It started to rain our first night in Sask Landing Provincial Park. We headed out the Cypress Hills in the rain. And boy did it rain! The media called it the "billion dollar rain" since we were in a drought until that time. Our 2008 Airstream did not fare too well. We had leaks in the front window and from the skylight. The skylight had cracks where is was screwed down too tightly. We had a new one on order (for SIX weeks from our dealer) but it didn't arrive in time. "Timely fashion"...

Southern Saskatchewan Trip June 2009 - 1 Sask Landing

Posted 06-30-2009 at 09:14 PM by bolerama
From Saskatoon, our first stop was Sask Landing Provincial Park. We were in the overflow area, so we had no water or power, but the site was beautiful. We were on the river, so through the shrubbery, we had a wide expanse of beach. Goliath, our Chesapeake Bay Retriever, had a great run and swim. Daisy, our Shih Tzu, never understands Goliath's zeal for the beach. He was "dog-tired" after his romp.

Unfortunately, it started to rain during the night and we had to pack up in...

090613b - Flagstaff

Posted 06-28-2009 at 11:47 AM by chbocca (Toaster Travels)
One of our favorite towns.

On this trip, we actually discovered KOA, which stands for "Kampgrounds of America (KOA)." We'd seen them previously but for some reason never stayed there...until now. The Flagstaff KOA is a flagship KOA - it was just great! The setting, their friendliness, the little wonderful events, like popcorn and root beer floats at free movie time, (often) free pancake breakfast, etc. We are now members and find KOA very, very convenient - the President's...

090613a - Needles

Posted 06-28-2009 at 11:08 AM by chbocca (Toaster Travels)
We just finished our longest adventure in the Bambi - 13 days with some 18 planned stops and 2200 miles - a Southwestern tour.

Attached is a map of our trip, which took us through Needles, Flagstaff, Gallup, Durango, Taos, Albuquerque, Sante Fe, Las Cruces, Tucson, Scottsdale, and Blythe.

Our first stay was Needles at the good Needles Marina Park. We've stayed here back in 2006 on our trip to Yosemite. Did not disappoint. Our campsite was again along the grass on the...

screen door slide

Posted 06-28-2009 at 07:34 AM by Jasper_pilot
I have a 74 safari and I'm looking for the plastic slide that goes on the screen door to cover up the latch hole. I have no idea what it looks like all I know is that you can not open the exterior door with out yanking on it, as the screen door latch hold the door shut. Does some one have a picture of what this slide looks like and any idea where I can get one.
