We drove down from Rocky Springs Campground.... about 200 miles. Got the last available site for a 4-night stretch in Fontainebleau State Park... where we stayed last March. Louisiana is cool because the state parks honor our Senior pass (America the Beautiful) for 50% off camping fees... and they have free Wi-Fi ! It was Donna's birthday so we went out to eat at Rip's on the Lake... in Mandeville... overlooking Lake Pontchartrain. Very good... I'd recommend it. Rosalind, the owner is very nice and gracious. We said hi and chatted, she remembered us from our previous visit... "you were staying at the state park"... ... that's us. Say hi if you visit.
Next day we drove the causeway into New Orleans, parked free at the Art Museum and took the tram downtown for some city hiking and sight-seeing Had fun. We enjoy seeing the old buildings, reading historical tidbits, people watching, street musicians, mimes, art galleries, great restaurants, lots of bars. It's a one-of-a-kind place... sorta like Key West or Venice. Rare and unusual, sometimes raucous, even primal, not very clean. Not for everyone. We like it a lot. Ate a lot of good food. Spent the whole day and drove home in the dark, rush-hour traffic at 5:30 pm
Next day we rested around camp... took a small bike ride... a little hiking. Went shopping at Winn Dixie. Next day was Thanksgiving... stayed around. Donna cooked a great little meal. Rotisserie turkey with all the trimmings.... I was very thankful.
Next day we would have had to move to a primitive site so we packed up and left instead. Decided to go to a state park on the south side of the Mississippi and explore town from that end (closer). Before we left we hiked the nature trail out to Bayou Cane... 5 miles. A very wide and groomed trail... not spectacular. But I saw a Bobcat!... a brief glimpse as it ducked into the bushes up ahead.
