We left the Silver City Wal-Mart about 11 am. Drove S.W. down US 90, then N.W. p US 70 into Arizona!. Yeah!... a new state! . A storm front was brewing on the western horizon as we drove. Rain in the mountains. Stopped for lunch at a little cafe in Duncan, AZ. The rain started as we ate. Kinda let up as we continued on to Safford, then south on US 191 to Roper Lake State Park... a total of 120 miles.
It's a pretty nice camp here... quite formal and 'civilized'... structured but comfortable. There is a natural hot springs tub... but it's only about 95º. The views of the Pinaleno Mountains and Mt. Graham at 10,720' are sublime. There is a road to the very top! Many birds around the lake and camp. Saw my first Gambel's Quail, they're everywhere here, running in amongst the brush. Also saw my first Yellow-headed Blackbirds & White-crowned Sparrows... also many Red-winged Blackbirds, American Goldfinches, Northern Harrier, American Coots, Mallards, Common Mergansers. Rumors are there's a Tundra Goose also... of his course... but haven't seen it yet.
Rained most of the first night. Sprinkled on Thursday. Had a great dinner at Brick's and treated ourselves to a movie... saw Avatar, it was great. Friday dawns gray again... a cool 45º... looks like more rain.
